transmission filter seal removal 4L60E

Postby chris in b'ham [OP] » April 13th 2012, 3:08am

dropped the tranny pan today to change the filter and install a new cast aluminum deep pan from B&M. all went well even considering the fact that the bright sparks at GM forgot to bless us with a drain plug. stupid!! i pulled the filter and then attempted to remove the seal it seats in. no luck whatsoever. it seems like that should be replaced with the filter ( my van is 2005 w/ 4L60E tranny). is there a trick or special tool to get that thing out. i couldn't budge it, so i left it in, put in the new filter and went about my business. what's up with that?

thanks for any light you can shed on this problem.

best to all, chris

I use a flat screw driver and hammer. Once it bends a needle nose pliers pulls it right out.
Tap the new one in with a same sized socket. The flat end not the open.

Do not even worry about it. Just leave it in.

This is the tool I use to remove mine. Four dollars.

Another four dollars will get you a drain plug that you can install.

The 2nd Gen van filter seals are a real pain. If you have not already damaged it, just leave it in. If you have damaged it at all, use chevymaher's technique, just be careful not to damage the surrounding aluminum.

Really? Is it even a different filter between a 700R4 and a 4L60?

thanks for the quick replies. now that i have the new aluminum pan complete with a drain plug dropping the pan won't be such a pain in the butt. next time i'm in there i'll try again. how critical is that seal to the operation of the tranny?

thanks again, chris

It is critical. But damaging the surrounding aluminum would mean real problems . If the filter feels good going in I would not bother with it.

if the seal is compromised what effect would that have on the tranny and it's performance?

thanks, chris
