Tranny Swap/What year will fit?

Tranny Swap/What year will fit?

Postby kocka80 [OP] » March 28th 2008, 10:47pm

Hello everyone newbe on the forum.

I have a 96 gmc safari and my transmission is giving up on me as well as the rear end . both of them was rebuild already once .
unfortunetly the only thing I can afford now is to get these from a junkyard and do the swap my self (never done that before but Im sure I can handle it)
what year will fit to my van?besides 96 what do I have to watch out for ? and someone please turn the light on for me on these numbers 4l60e,700r4? is that how you identify
transmissions ? same questions would apply for the differential too. I was going thru the old forum but never really got an answer .all tranny swaps was for older
vans then mine . I was also reading that people were using trannys from other Chevys would that work for me to or no? this van is my daily driver so the only thing I am looking for is to get it back on the street , I listen to any input you guys make .
thank you all in advance .

For the tranny, you have a 4L60E transmission. It is basically a modern version of a 700R4.
You will want to get one from a '96 to '98 Astro or Safari. The 2wd and 4wd versions are different, so get the appropriate one.
Do not get one from a pick-up truck, Caprice or Camaro. The torque converter and the clutches are different.

As for the rear diff, I believe the mounts for composite and steel leaf springs are different, but otherwise they are all the same('cept for gear ratio's)
Someone may wanna back me up on that, though...

I have the two piece case on my safari , so in my simple mind any of the two case tranny will fit to my van .OR NOT? OR there is more to it then take off and bolt on. sorry for the questions but junkyard is a quik and cheap solution for me since thats all I can afford right now but at the same time I need my van
thats gonna give some time to save up on a rebuild or get another safari(astro) of course

oh yeah please correct me if Im saying something stupid

the 4l60 two part case is the correct trannsmission for your van, just remember 2wd only. the 4x4 trans has a different output set-up

Robert

P.S. the diff is known as a 7.5 gm diff. the ratio is important for your speedo to read accurate.

check tciauto.com for pricing and info on the trannsmission. They were awsom for me when doing the same job.

Hope this helps

Just to split hairs here...

The neutral safety switch on both designs is a bolt-on unit, and will bolt on to either one.

And the "2-piece-case 4L60E" is actually called a 4L65E. It is basically the same mechanically and electrically, with the pump being re-designed for better sealing.
They made it a 2-piece case design because, when installed in a Corvette, the engine is at the front, and the trans is at the rear.

thanks for the info I`ll check it out .
I replaced the rear end yesterday , got it out from from a 95 safari , runs great now no noise from the back whatsoever .Have to get used to that
cost me $150 and fits right on . this is gonna give me time on the tranny since I can drive it now .tranny slips first to second gear but I just let go of the gas pedal for a second or two to prevent slipping then step on it again . I may put in a tranny from junk yard as well if I find a front damage one.

I know what you mean about getting used to a lack of noise!
My diff used to howl real bad, but it got quiet right at 95kph, so that was my cruising speed. When I rebuilt it, I found myself doing 120kph+(on the highway). I had to learn to look at the speedo once in a while!

Im not trying to be a smart *** but you maybe incorrect gtkane i have read this on one of the tranny websites
*PLEASE NOTE: If you have a 4.8, 5.3, LS1, 6.0L engine - You have a unique style 4L60E called the 4L65E (found in most all late model applications

does this means that i cannot fit a tranny onto my safari with these engine sizes or what? :confused3:

No smart-assedness taken!
It will bolt on to any GM engine with a SBC bellhousing boltpattern built since 1955. And that includes 4.3, 5.7, etc.

And just to let you know, I build GM transmissions for a living! :D

So do you have to get a tranny from a astro/safari or will ones from different vehicles work?

Ha,Ha!

OK, to clarify...
On a late model 'vette, the engine is under the hood, while the trans is mounted to the rear diff.

I guess it does look kinda goofy how I wrote it!

AutomaticThe purpose of an Automatic Transmission is similar to that of a manual transmission, the auto tranny's primary duty is to allow the engine to operate in its narrow range of speeds while providing a wide range of output speeds.
