Yes, I believe so. I know you can't go backwards and I'm pretty sure I've seen a pro say yes to that question elsewhere.

well i bought the trans, took the old one out and put the new one in on new years day, had it all back together around midnight, started it up and had a nasty leak from one of the lovely quick disconnect fittings on the trans. so another trip to the junkyard saturday morning, got the fitting and now she's leak free, took her for a spin and to my suprise it actually works! all gears lol! so i bought insurance today and its off to the secretary of state in the morning for plates and registration, cant wait to drive her!

This is not quite true. My friend put a TH350 + Converter into a 1990 Astro and it worked. He has also put an older 700R4 in a 1994 Astro where a 4L60e was stock. It worked great. The 700R4 does not need the computer to control the shifts.

AutomaticThe purpose of an Automatic Transmission is similar to that of a manual transmission, the auto tranny's primary duty is to allow the engine to operate in its narrow range of speeds while providing a wide range of output speeds.
