Won't shift unless I let off the accelerator

Won't shift unless I let off the accelerator

Postby fowler [OP] » March 15th 2010, 8:36pm

Hi, I have a 2000 Astro, V6 RWD with 126,000 miles on it. Since last May, my transmission won't shift from 2-3 without either revving very high or me letting my foot off the gas. When I do let my foot off the gas, it shifts fine. I've replaced the TPS sensor and a solenoid. I've seen this same exact issue described on this forum in the past, but I've never found a solution for it. Does anyone know of a solution? Or is my best bet to get it replaced?

Well actually it's the 1-2 shift and I just found this too: http://www.gmtruckhq.com/?q=node/93

2. 1-2 shift does not happen at WOT until you let off the gas: Best case: try replacing the TPS. Middle case: leak in the 2nd gear apply circuit (servo assembly or 1-2 accumulator). Doublecheck by using the pressure gauge and watch for a big drop when the PCM commands 2nd gear. Worst case: poor line pressure rise (see below).

I've already tried the TPS, so I guess I'll have to test the pressure next.

So that trans doesn't shift at all during WOT or mild acceleration? I just want to make sure because the 1-2 shift is the first shift and the 2-3 shift is the second one.

It's the first shift. Sometimes in the morning it will shift if I'm driving slowly in the neighborhood, but once it starts to warm up, it will only shift if I let off the gas. It will shift at a high RPM, which I'm not really comfortable with, so I let off the gas to make it shift around 25mph usually.

AutomaticThe purpose of an Automatic Transmission is similar to that of a manual transmission, the auto tranny's primary duty is to allow the engine to operate in its narrow range of speeds while providing a wide range of output speeds.
