Tranny slip/catches, then slip/catches off the line only...w

Hello All:

great great website, first post.

my 2002 awd safari with 86k miles does as described in the subject above -- that is, when first accelerating from a stop, it feels (even on a dry day) like the wheels are slipping for a split second, usually twice, before the tranny fully engages and then its fine.

is this something that can be fixed or is it the beginning of a more serious problems developing?

When this happens... are you pressing the gas pedal harder?

negative...just normal pedal pressure to accelerate from a stop...in fact, sometimes i am tempted to back off the gas, but the whole thing lasts only two-four seconds and it becomes normal (whatever "normal" is)

First thing I'd do is look at the amount/condition of ATF in the transmission and perhaps an ATF filter change and go from there.
