96 astro awd compatible with 1995 4wd Blazer?

Postby darwindustbin [OP] » September 5th 2010, 5:58pm

Hi,

Im in the uk and have lost 2nd gear on my box - i still have 1st, 3rd and 4th. :screaming:

A rebuild is going to be about £1500 so looking for a second hand box but few and far between in the UK.

I have found a 4wd Blazer 1995/6 - will this box go in?

Also it seems i can lay hands on numerous 4l80e's - would these be any use to me?

Thanks in advance

Paul

(or any easy fixes why i dont have 2nd would be good!)
Cheers
Paul

If the donor tranny has PWM stamped on it, you should be able to make it work (pulse width modulated) since it's from a 4x4 and you have AWD. If it doesn't say PWM, it will not work.

Do you still have reverse or is that gone, too? Generally, you're looking at a destroyed sun shell if 2nd and reverse are gone, which essentially requires a rebuild.

One rebuild here:

Thanks for the reply - i do still have reverse.

When it tries to change into 2nd it seems to rev as if in neutral. I have had no horrible noises and it started after being sat in 4th towing for about an hour.

Ay other ideas?

Thanks

Paul

Then I'd check your 1-2 shift solenoid. Sounds like it might be stuck/failing. You'll have to drop the pan, so it's a good time to replace the filter. The solenoids are cheap, so I'd say change 'em all (they all will fail eventually).

^ The bf's dad was an auto tranny specialist way back when they were voodoo boxes (for Nash, Chevy & Pontiac before opening his own shop) - I have but learned a very, very little (they're still voodoo boxes to me). His uncle also was a GM Goodwrench mechanic who was THE goodwrench for at least the Eastern US and possibly the whole US.

Automatic Forum
AutomaticThe purpose of an Automatic Transmission is similar to that of a manual transmission, the auto tranny's primary duty is to allow the engine to operate in its narrow range of speeds while providing a wide range of output speeds.
