Hard shift into reverse sometimes

Hard shift into reverse sometimes

Postby imavanner [OP] » October 12th 2014, 6:50pm

Sometimes I get a hard shift ito reverse like a grind

Would that be related to the clutch cylinders

my van is an 88 safari sle 5speed manual

I'm no expert, but I've found in my manual s10s that if I go into 5th, then drop it into reverse it won't grind. I've heard people speak of synchronizers before being an issue, but I'm not sure. Someone with more knowledge will chime in im sure.

Yes if the clutch needs bled and isn't disengaging correctly. That will make it grind.
As posted above it is a synchronization issue. Reverse has no synchro's. Put it in first before going for reverse. That stops the rotating parts in the trans so when you shift into reverse they are stationary.

Doesn't always happen I don't think

I have done the first gear as.you mentioned and it helped

When I put a big load on 5th feels like there may be some vibration from flywheel. Could that be from the flywheel as it was resurfaced rather than being replaced

Guy I got from had someone look at.it and said needs a clutch slave cylinder and a tps sensor

Manual Forum
ManualGM Astro/Safari vans were produced with a 4-speed manual or a 5-speed manual transmission. Manual transmissions feature a driver-operated clutch and a movable gear stick which are commonly swapped with automatics in custom applications and transmission conversions.
