97 astro blows ign fuse when key turned to start position

My 97 astro blew an ign 40a fuse last night when I turned the key to start it. It did that three times only when turning all the way to the start position. I put a jumper in because I was out of fuses to steal from other locations.

After I put the jumper in, I laid under the van and jumped the starter solenoid with a screw driver and the van started up and I was able to get home.

Can someone help with known problems on this issue before I start diagnosing it tonight?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Disconnect the small wire from the side of the starter solenoid, and insulate it from touching any ground. Rig a 12v light bulb in place of the burnt fuse, then set the key to start and have someone hold it there.

Start shaking wires until the bulb extinguishes. You have found the short circuit. Repair the bugger and keep on truck'n.
