Finding hot wire when key in on 98LS

Postby CougarsLS [OP] » September 24th 2011, 7:13pm

Please help. I have changes my headlights and my turn/park lights to after market types. The head lights are the Spyder halo projectors and the turn/parks are the IPCW front parks lights with the clear lens. The headlight have two small bulbs in addition to the standard bulbs the illuminate the halo portions of the headlights and the turn/park lights have two small lights that back light the reflectors in each light. I'm trying to find out how to and where to hock up the extra bulbs so that they come on when the key is on. My LS has the day time running lights with the composite type lens. Is there anybody out there that's willing to give me some insight on this matter. Thanks in advance for your reply. Cougar.

After reviewing my post I discovered a typo. I should have written changed instead of changes. Is there a way to edit my posts after I submit them?

Upper right hand corner of your post. Look for the "EDIT" button, next to the "QUOTE" button. It's only available for a limited time after you post. Also consider "Hooked up" instead of "Hocked up". Interesting image it presents.

We'll know what you mean even if you do a few tiepoos.

Any particular reason you want the key to control the power?

Potentially you can tap into any power source at the fuse panel that only powers on when key is on , such as turn signals , radio , wipers .....

you should put an inline fuse ,,and be safe with a relay like as used with fog lamps to protect the vans wiring , just because more lamps draw more juice

You can get the wiring diagram for the headlamps here

I agree with using a relay.Keyed power available at the fuse panel inside marked IGN.A wire attached to a single blade plug in.Only on when the key in run position.Use that to operate your relay that powers the lights.

What I would really like is to have the new lights come on the same way my daytime running lights come on. The lights turn off when the starter is engaged to save the battery and when in the daytime mode the brightness is reduced as there not needed to see the road. It should be simple enough. The problem is that I don't have any experience doing this kind of thing and I don't want to damage anything while trying to figure it out. Has anyone out there done this before? I have talked with couple of auto electric shops and they assured me that it was a big deal with lots of testing and research and that I would have to leave it with them. I've had some bad experiences with shops that take a lot of time telling me about all of the problems and don't say anything about the solution. That's a bad sign that usually results in the job done wrong or being over charged or both. The wiring diagrams are readily available I'm just not in tune with how to read them. I don't have an issue with paying someone to do the job for me provided that its done rite and I don't have any future problems related to it. My question is what is the rite way to do this kind of thing? Can I attach my new extra lights wiring to the current headlight wiring provided that I find out witch wires are the correct ones or will the extra current draw heat up the wiring or cause other problems? I would be adding four small marker sized bulbs to each headlight or are there better approaches. Thanks in advance for any advice. Cougar.
