What the heck are these wires? (pic)

What the heck are these wires? (pic)

Postby KC10Chief [OP] » January 15th 2012, 8:23am

Does anybody know what wires these might be in this picture? They run over my battery and into the same hole that the hood release cable runs through in the fender. I suspect that they have something to do with the remote start system that is installed in my van. I suspect that whoever installed it, did a hack job on it. One of them was hooked up to a hood switch but it seems to have had no effect on anything by removing it. Do any wires normally run through this area or is it to something aftermarket?

If your concerned about what they do get your multimeter out set it to continuity, and test it to ground the frame ( stab the wire see PIC) if it is open or beeps depending on your multimeter its a ground. In that case i'd leave it. If it is not a ground set the multimeter to DC voltage and test if there is voltage in the lines (same way stab the wire see PIC) . Either way tuck those wires in if you need them.

I am not sure what those wires are in picture are.But on mine, in between the battery and fender I do have a bunch of wires running past the battery.Maybe thats where they came from before they started hacking.

Used cars can be a real joy sometimes, especially when the PO did a bit of tinkering that needs to be traced out.

Much nicer when you get what the factory did, period ! I would stab the wires to see if there is a live one, then

see if it makes any difference when it is disconnected. Old trucks that had light bars removed before sale can

have live wires that were just cut and let lie. A short waiting to happen. I'm sure that you can resolve this

situation by either ID'ing it as factory or aftermarket. Are there any other vans in your local that you could

get a peek at ?

Does the remote start work correctly? Have you checked to see if it has an alarm

Yeah, I figured that the hood switch was for the remote start. But I removed the hood switch when I took the battery out a couple weeks ago. The remote start still works fine. I'll check it with my multi-meter as soon as my wife lets me have the garage again! It's so dang cold outside that I just don't want to mess with it too much. The van is running fine and the remote start works. No rush on these wires. I wish spring would get here soon so I can work on my van outside! It was -30 degrees at my house last night. Completely ridiculous!

That hood switch is inline with the remote start system to shut the engine off in the presence of a closed switch. This is a saftey feature. It's a switch that completes a ground, so simply removing it only defeats the ability to shut the motor off via the switch when the hood is opened.

Works in the same way that your door switches work. You open the door, the switch is allowed to make contact with ground-enabling the dome light to function. Any door opened allows the circuit to be completed, illuminating the light.
A temporary fix usually becomes a permanent solution, therefore it does not exist.
