How to read codes off check engine light

How to read codes off check engine light

Postby ccookie66 [OP] » March 4th 2012, 2:18am

Ok, so I noticed the check engine light is on. I know there is a way to read the trouble codes, with a paper clip? Can anyone tell me how to do this? My van is a 93 Chevy Astro. Thanks.

Ylas also will give you a small key to read them. Basically stick a paper clip in the wire bulkhead and join two wires then count the blinks. i think code 12 will flash three times then the codes. Someone with an older van we chime in soon

How to read the codes

Ground terminals A and B (see diagram below) with the ignition "ON" and engine not running. The system will enter the diagnostic mode. In this mode, the computer will display a Code 12, three consecutive times, by flashing the "CHECK ENGINE", "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" or "MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP" or light. A Code 12 consists of one flash, a short pause, then two flashes in rapid succession.
After Code 12 is displayed, any stored trouble codes will be displayed by flashing the "CHECK ENGINE", "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" or "MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP" light. All codes are displayed 3 times each then a code 12 will repeat. In the diagnostic mode, the computer will also energize all computer controlled relays and solenoids.

Where is this located? Up under the dash on the drivers side, with the fuses?

Should be right at the bottom edge of the dash near your left leg when your sitting.Even with a brite light it rough to see with the black interior. But it circled in red.

Thank you! I found out it was code 43. After a little work, it was all set and the service engine soon light was out!

can you use this method (paper clip) with a OBD-2 (1997 chevy astro), or is this only for the older OBD-1 systems?

I'm pretty sure it will only work for the older OBD-1 systems. I tried it on the windstar, and it didn't work. I think you need a code reader for the OBD-2 systems.
