99 astro wont start

Postby girlscoutmom227 [OP] » December 15th 2008, 5:35pm

My 99 Astro suddenly won't start . I just drove it from Cleveland to Columbus Ohio last night . I shut it off and a few minutes later went out to go to the store and all I get is a click. Have recently replaced the alternator and the water pump. Could this problem be the starter?

What is the history of the battery?

The battery is the one that came with the van when we bought it 2 years ago. But the voltage guage isnt showing a low charge, and all the lights work. All I get is a click when I turn the key

Hmm. Sounds like the starter solenoid (astro335 - do the newer ones have a separate solenoid that sits on top like the old ones?) might be bad.

A very LIGHT tap on the solenoid, if yours has one, on top of the starter motor might get you going again. And if it does, that tells you it needs to be replaced.

Yes, it will have a solenoid on top of the starter. A lit tap will get it working if that is the problem (I can't think of how many of my own cars I have done that to  ). But one thing to remember, just because your lights come on does not mean there is enough voltage to turn the starter over. Have the battery checked to be safe. It would be something as annoying as corrosion on the cables that attach to the starter. My van did that last year. Suddenly one day, it started turning over funny and didn't seem to charge the battery as well as it used to. I cleaned the connectors at the battery and the starter and everything was fine.

And why was the alternator changed?

Replaced it because it no longer charged the battery. My voltage guage was always on the low side and suddenly one day my battery light came on and I drove it till it died. After we changed the alternator and charged up the battery it has run just fine .

Cool, thanks. That's why I always ask a million questions, its hard to give helpful suggestions without having a feel for your van. First, I would still have the battery tested. Anyone of the parts places (autozone, advanced, o'reilly's, etc) should be able to test your battery for free. Now if the battery comes up fine, like leeann_93 already suggested, I would look at the starter.
