Ign Wires

Ign Wires

Postby gmtofd [OP] » December 1st 2008, 7:21pm

About time for a set of ign wires for the 2000 Astro.

The rule-of-thumb is to replace with OEM, but was wondering if anyone tried a set of Car Quest Gold series 7673? Seen a set on Ebay going for about $30 cheaper than OEM.

Thanks for any response.

Not sure about the carquest ones, but don't you have a local parts store? It would probably be best to just buy it from there. It would be really crappy to buy maintenance parts online just to have a problem, if one arises.

I wouldn't use anything but Delco (OEM)!!! this is one area of the van that I don't cut costs on. Too many times I have tried, and failed. Anybody else??? :swerve:

Hi gmtofd
remark123 is right, you can't go wrong with Delco parts for the ignition system and what I would suggest as well. To many problems with after market stuff when it comes to ignition. Hope this helps. :)

I agree, go OEM if at all possible. The $30 you will save will end up costing you far more money and time when you have to replace them again. If you really don't want to spend the money, do not buy carquest wires. Every time we use a set of carquest wires at work I end up having to replace them.

IMO, the wire material manufacturing quality control for the high line aftermarket wire sets is just as good as AC Delco, but where they fall short is that they are multi-application. That means the wires are longer than OEM which causes their early demise, when installed in Astros from rubbing against stuff, eventual cross arcing no manner how carefully installed.

Brought a set of AC Delco, # 9746KK, from Rockauto for about $60. There replacement wire set #, once 9746KK runs out of stock is 746KK at about $92. The order taker informed that there is absolutely no difference in these two wire sets, they are both exact fit. GM justs changes the part # and jacks up the price.

This is a '00 model year, and found that removing the wire seperator, held in place with two 3/8 head bolts provides better access to the separator clips on the left driver's side makes for an easier job. On the right side, the seperator stays in place, but by having the front of the van jacked up, it's easy to access the #2 and 4 plug wires.

Glad you stayed with the OEM wires in your van. I always love it when you need a hoist to change spark plugs.
