Intermittent Start Problem

Intermittent Start Problem

Postby RootsMan [OP] » June 16th 2013, 4:48pm

Greetings,

I have an intermittent start problem with my 2003 Chevy Astro AWD.

Sometimes when I turn the key to ignition, all the lights on the dish turn off, and the starter does not crank. Just silence. And the dash lights stay off while the key is held in the ignition position.
This has happened when the engine is cold or hot.
Same problem when the transmission indicator is in neutral.

After a couple of tries, without changing gears, it'll start. Moving the gear leaver to neutral then back to park doesn't always work.

I noticed that when I insert the key into the ignition, and before turning it, the dash lights flash, and the fuel gauge drops to empty.

Could this be a short in the ignition switch?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Does the time on your radio reset, or is it still the same?

I would suspect the switch.

Resolution:

My mechanic determined it was the starter. The starter was replaced and the van now starts reliably.

The dash lights still flash, and the fuel gauge drops to below empty when the key is inserted into the ignition, and before turning it. I don't recall if this was happening before the intermittent start issue.

(???) (???)

To my way of thinking...

Since the key mechanism is connected to the start switch by a push rod, it is not reasonable for the system

to exhibit the flashing lights by merely inserting the key, w/o actually twisting it. But, OTOH, what do I know ?

I had the same issue on my 02' AWD, it turned out to be the small wire running to the starter. I just replaced 2' of the wire and the conector.

Mine issue always happened after the starter became wet, after good hard wiggle on the wire the starter worked.
