Won't start in damp weather.

Won't start in damp weather.

Postby mikepart [OP] » July 13th 2009, 1:34am

For the second summer my 98 Safari won't start in damp weather. So far I have replaced the plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and the coil. If I open the dog house and aim a hair dryer or heat lamp at the rear of the engine it will usually start in about 15 minutes. It is then fine for the rest of the day. There is no visible arcing. It is getting spark to the plugs and acts like a fuel problem. The fuel pump has been replaced and I can hear it running. Any thoughts or suggestions? I am about to permanently mount the hair dryer under the dog house. Thanks

Pop the distributer cap off and check if the small mesh screens in the base plate of the distributor are clear or open. These allow the cap to "breathe" and moisture or condensation to dissipate.

If they are clogged with dirt, clean them with compressed air or brake cleaner. Just a possibility....................

I have a 96 that does the same thing :banghead: ..I use a hair dryer too just from the front. There is an area just above the alternator, and it blows back on the coil and module (which are both new), and it usually only takes a minute or so for it to start. If you solve the problem please let us know. Thanks

Hello
I had a similar problem starting 2 years ago
My safari ran fine when the weather was dry but would start missing when it rained or snowed.
at times it would not start at all and the check engine light would come on and the code was a p300 misfire.
Well I did the usual tune up and diagnosis stuff to no avail.
To make a long story short.
I noticed that my turn signal switch started acting up at the same time as the misfires and when it was wet outside. both went hand in hand.
I replaced the turn signal switch and viola problem solved.
Van now runs like a champ in all weather conditions. no misfires anymore.
