turn signal issues

turn signal issues

Postby mikeybonez1 [OP] » May 7th 2010, 6:15am

hi all, this is my first post in this group and i'm hoping it's an informative group.

my issue is the right turn signal operation. a few months ago my blinker went on the fritz and i did some investigating and thought it was the socket since the bulb checked out and the switch in the column seemed fine. i replaced the socket and all was well for about 3 months. the problem returned and I notice if i "tap" the turn signal housing, the signal starts to blink. the front signal is in fine order but the rear goes out on me on the right side only. I think it's a wiring issue and there's a break in one of the wires but I'm not sure if it's that or the flasher relay at the convenience center. if anyone can help, by all means don't be afraid to post since i want to cure this before i get a ticket

I think you are going to have to dig into the wiring. Someone else may have a better answer though so stay tuned. Welcome to the Forum. Jim

This is the rear tail lens? If so, that's where your problem is. Check connections to the replacement socket, contacts on the bottom of the bulb, moisture in the lens, and corrosion at any replacement connectors/grounds.

thanks to both of you guys for the replies. the connections are solid, there's no corrosion on the butt connectors and no moisture in the lens (I silicon-ed it when I replaced the socket with Lexel). My thought is a break in one of wires between the frame & the lens assembly but I'm hoping that I can open up the insulation and do a resistance test on the wires before I try to replace them. If anyone has a better idea or knows of a failure area, let me know

Turn key ON. Remove the turn signal flasher and install a jumper. This will keep the bulb on. Turn right signal on and begin disassembly while watching the bulb. Gently pull, twist, move wires and socket and see if you can get the fault to show itself.

thanks astroplane, i more or less did that except i kept the bulb in and used a Digital multi-meter to trace the voltage path along the wires. with the signal on, 1 wire was receiving bout 12.5v, and the other was receiving .2v at the outlet. there was a break in insulation on the ground as well which was repaired with some "bead sealer" a.k.a liquid electrical tape and all is functioning fine for now. my major gripe is how GM decided to run the wiring for the Astro and how well their power windows hold up which i will post about in another topic since that too is a problem on this van
