Put some guns and ammo in it, drove it to Free America, shot said guns and ammo, picked up a new gun and drove it home. Got 18.2 mpg for the trip, which isn't bad considering I went 75-80 whenever possible (most of the way).

Postby 1lowcab » February 12th 2017, 6:16am

Got my new leaf springs on today along with all new hangers/mounts. I used SDtruck springs 22-1195 3+1.

All I can say is WOW!!!!!!!! I didn't really think it would make that much difference but it feels like a totally different van, it handles WAY better and is very quiet now.

The front bushings on the leaf springs were toast on both sides.

Sorry, no pics as my hands were too dirty to use my phone.

First thing in the morning I start on the upper + lower control arms left and right side + new wheel bearings.

It depends on how it is used, with a 3/4" air gap you can get an R3 out of it, w/o the air gap it is like .5 or less.

Sorry Bruce, it's not. Infrastop is double layer, Reflectix is single.
I've installed both in vans, will never use Reflectix again.

Reflectix double
http://www.reflectixinc.com/products/do ... nsulation/
I've used the stuff w/ fabric woven in, double layer, single, chrome both sides and white one side. That stuff is made any way you want it but it still comes to how you use it to achieve the r value your after.

I just don't see the total R value being any where near that high without some seriously thick insulation. Those radiant barriers have high thermal conductivity, so if there isn't an air space... well you know.

I was reading the label thingy, maybe I missed the decimal point??? Y'all got me wondering now, I need to go look.

I actually have both, and a "laser" thermometer, I could do a side by each comparison and take some readings. Its sunny/ 80 deg here today. Data talks!

1) Reflectix (Single row) flush on roof and at ~1/2" air gap
2) Infrastop flush on roof and at ~1/2" air gap
3) Both flush on roof and at ~1/2" air gap

My roof will have both since I didn't have enough Infrastop for a dual layer on top, so might as well.
I won't be able to calculate R values but temp shift should be pretty telling.

Exactly Will. On one site you'll find a claim of R19, that is used with un-faced R13 fiberglass and a 3/4" gap behind the sheetrock so one would assume a value of R6, but, that includes the air gap and sheetrock.
Sandwiched flat on both sides w/ no air gap the R value is about .5, it is not a good insulator for cold but the air gap allows for the reflective stuff to work and it provides a vapor / draft barrier so it helps in other ways.
Steel buildings like pole barns are where most people see it. It comes in 4 or 5 foot rolls with a peel and stick glue on one edge to stick to the next roll above or below so it stops drafts. It makes a huge difference in the summer and keeps you from baking particularly if the ridge and soffits are vented. In the winter it keeps the drafts out and again the air gap comes into play and this is why the double bubble with a fiberglass back is used in colder climates. The stuff I used w/ fiberglass had about an inch of glass glued to the backside.

Re: What have you done to/with your van today?

Started on the control arms and wheel bearings, I'll post up pics later....I'm beat! Been working on them for 2 days now.

I did the pass side first, it fought me every step of the way. The wheel bearing was rusted in place, had to have it pressed out, then the front bolt on the lower control arm was seized to the bushing, I had to cut it out with a sawzall.....not fun at all!!!!!

The passenger side torsion bar is seized in the trans crossmember so I had to drop the crossmember to get the torsion bars out of the way.

All in all the pass side took 2 full days from start to finish, the Ohio winters have not been kind to these bolts.
The funny part is the drivers side came right apart with zero drama, I'm going to put it back together tomorrow and get an alignment.

Every bushing in the control arms were shot on both sides, maybe beyond shot, they were toast as was the pass side wheel bearing. Should feel really different once its back together.

Pics coming soon!!!

Takes forever to find a Fotomat these days. Most of the time when I DO find one, they just offer me coffee or want to make a key for me. I even had one try to sell me a timeshare.

Off to the next one, I guess...

Wal Marts do that now. In the very back in the customer service area. They have a picture deal as good as photomat. Except they do it right now.
