does my thermostat need replaced

My check engine light came on in my 2001 Astro. I had Advance Auto do a diagnostic and they came up with a faulty thermostat. I bought a new thermostat, but it's taken me several days to get around to replacing and then today my check engine light has gone out. I've not been having any heater problems, that I've noticed. Is it possible that it was stuck open and now it has come "unstuck"?

If there is any residue in the system, it can screw with the thermostat.
Like pizza, or sand.
I sense a great YouTube coming out of this. Like those "Look what I found when I cut open this battery" videos. Pull pizza, sand, bowling balls, smart cars, 8 track tape players, all out of a radiator hose.

"And look, here's an old Victrola phonograph"
