Cut the floor to fit snug and glued a .5" layer of egg crate foam on the bottom (same stuff you'd throw on a full sized mattress as a topper)

Cut the cover and started screwing the floor down. Getting there..

With the cover in place. Not sure if I'm going to put hinges on it or just keep it as a lift out cover. Still need to add spacers to bring it up level with the floor. (Sits just a tiny bit lower.. just enough to give it a lip. Won't matter once carpet is glued down)

Never gave this a thought, until now that is. Anxious to see what happens here.
actually not that big of deal. The hump is just way oversized and is intrusive into the people space in my opinion. Cutting the hump off and grinding it down took just a minute. The gas filler neck is metal and barely extends into the interior now. There's a rubber breather hose that runs along with the filler neck. I might replace it with something longer to tuck it away a little but it's pretty fine the way it is so who knows. What I'll likely end up doing is filling the cavity with expanding foam and cover it with carpet or whatever I put on the walls.

Thanks! This is actually the 2nd basement in this van. I made a really good sized one (probably 3 times as big) that sits in the spare tire well and is accessible from the inside with a lift off cover. Has been insanely useful which is why I decided to build this one.

Kept an eye on it for a couple yrs. Seemed pretty decent for around town and minimum highway cruising. Has a cool texture to it.

I'm really thinking about going Plasti-Dip the Whole Van. I realize prep is really important as well as Multiple layers. I think I'm going to start with the Camo Tan then some Camo pattern layers of Smoke(transparent grey). I really need somewhere to do it too.

BTW I really love the basements, once I get the spare tire rack that might be an option!

Keep it up!!!

The rear trunk should have been standard from the factory. It is on my list!

Those basements are on my wife's Town & Country (with the stow & go) and are a great thing. So much extra space available to keep things out of sight & out of the way. I too think the Astro needs them (along with the left side slider). You're doing a great job, keep the pics coming.

Leaving on a 1800 mile road trip tomorrow so decided to do a little maintenance that I've been wanting to get to.. new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, O2 sensor, and air filter. Check out the plugs. Pretty bad.

Really bad. The wires weren't much better. Two of them just crumbled apart in my hands.

Still want to do the fuel filter but it'll have to wait. The engine mounts look pretty rough as well. I got a new distributor but decided to wait until after the trip to install it. I'm guessing the one that's in there is probably not in the best condition. There was a good bit of rust on the shaft when I installed the new rotor and cap. It all seemed pretty snug though so that's good.

First leg pretty uneventful. Spent the night doing some truck stop camping. This van is ridiculously comfortable!

The second day started fine but quickly got not fine. The trailer started acting crappy. Turns out the sketchy old hitch just wasn't going to hold together. I'd reenforced it everyway possible before leaving but it just wasn't enough. The bumper and brackets were just too weak

Of course the only thing I could find was a universal fit that warned you wouldn't be able to keep your full sized spare. Well I don't have a spare but the rear basement takes up every square mm of the tire well so it didn't fit

Angle grinder, drill and using the trailer as a vice surface got it all straightened out and good to go. Nothing like Walmart parking lot fabrication. Haha

This trip is shaping up to be a bit of an adventure.. cruising along and the left front wheel decided it was going to start steering itself. Threw me into the grass. Got the van slowed down and back up on to the shoulder
