Re: 95 AWD camper van

The 2wd and the 4wd tie rods are almost the same diameter (5/8 vs 3/4) and both are tiny where they neck down into the ball. (Pic 1) There are a couple of thicker solutions that should work (such as a Ford Escape) but these ones designed for racing UTV's are pretty serious. Designed to be slammed in...

Re: 95 AWD camper van

Haha, well hope it pays off. Not hard to reverse / back out of any mistakes but it'd be nice if things worked out. So here are the considerations I've come up with so far.. The rack length (from flat end to flat end) needs to be about 22.75 inches to fall on that line between the upper and lower sus...

Re: 95 AWD camper van

Im also going to move the rack backwards an inch or two to put it more in line with the steering arm on the knuckle. That should further reduce the stress on the tie rod when getting beat around off road.

Re: 95 AWD camper van

Been talking to some suspension guys but ultimately, I'm going to just have to build this thing and see how it does. I'm going to move the outer tie rod to the top of the knuckle arm to eliminate that steep angle and reduce the stress, binding, overcenter condition, etc. It looks like I'm just insid...

Re: 95 AWD camper van

While we're on the subject, does anyone know why our tie rods have such an extreme angle to them? It seems like bump steer / toe out would be introduced as soon as the suspension started to compress at all.

Re: 95 AWD camper van

Does anyone know why GM angled the arms backwards the way they did? If there's not a specific reason other than packaging, I'll probably just come straight in and attach directly to the rack. Worse case scenario is ill do some testing to see what kind of bump steer that gives me and determine if I n...

Re: 95 AWD camper van

However, all the images I saw on racing sites and various front suspension manufacturers showed the tie rods essentially being straight out, pretty much perpendicular to the wheel/hub etc. but ours angle backwards a fair amount. I can't tell if thats for a reason or just because of the limited space.

Re: 95 AWD camper van

All this goofing around with the jeep has really motivated me to get back into the van. Step one, let's get this rack and pinion conversion knocked out. Couple questions for all you suspension engineers! Minimizing bump stop seems to done by having the end of the end links fall as close to the line ...

Re: 95 AWD camper van

Meanwhile, I got back onto the van today and did a little light wrenching for the first time in a long time. It was exciting! Also did some interweb surfing, looking at Holly fuel systems. It was a little late in the day to call them but I'm going to reach out to their tech guys and get some guidanc...

Re: 95 AWD camper van

I'm not gonna lie, this poor beat up Joop actually came around pretty decent. I took it out today and bounced it around some fields (and I do mean bounced.. this thing floats like a boat in the bumpy stuff). Haha

Re: 95 AWD camper van

Yeah, everyone turns up their nose at the cheap little winches but I used a 2500 lbs harbor freight winch on a trailer for 4 yrs to load cars, trucks, logs, etc. Flat tires, no tires, buried in garbage.. the little winch just worked. I figured I'd have to use a block/tackle to do anything tough with...

Re: 95 AWD camper van

This bumper tucks so tight up under the grill that it took quite a bit of trimming to get it all to fit. Finally done and back together though. Still need to install the wiring and control box but the hard part is done. Looks decent enough and this winch gets good reviews so it should definitely be ...

Re: 95 AWD camper van

Grabbed a $45 double din stereo from Amazon for the Jeep. Check out how tiny this thing is. The YouTube videos and reviews all claim it's surprisingly good. Can't beat the price and it even came with a tiny backup camera. We'll see how it does.

Re: 95 AWD camper van

Also, I was looking at various fender flares at the junkyard and wound up grabbing a flare from an Audi allroad which had a great shape but is only barely wide enough for the van. I'm thinking of using it as a mold to form new fiberglass flares and see how that works. I also like the flares from the...

Re: 95 AWD camper van

Yeah, this stuff wasn't particularly cheap but not ridiculous... I think I paid about 35 for 5 liters on Amazon. Meanwhile, continuing to fix minor things that were beat up and/or broke such as the pcv system which was broke and leaking oil all over everything.

Re: 95 AWD camper van

Gas tank could be helping? I recall when I had a Chevy Colorado we used to call it the Chevy learn, where the driver side was an inch lower because of driver + gas tank weight. Hey Tony, that's a good thought and definitely applicable to the van but the Jeep's tank is in the back, right behind the ...

Re: 95 AWD camper van

Speaking of which... I have no idea why the truck seems to lean a little towards the driver's side. My guess is the springs have settled a bit due to the constant weight of the driver. I'll swap the springs side to side this weekend and see if that levels it out a bit.

Re: 95 AWD camper van

Might be a week or so before I can add the tubing so I finished up the welds and shot the whole thing in bedliner. I'll dig the winch out of a box this weekend but it's good enough for now. It's got to come back off at some point anyway so I can adjust the mounting (one side seems to be just a hair ...

Re: 95 AWD camper van

Made some more progress on the bumper. It's about done now, just need to get some tubing cut and bent to shape. Everything else is about done though I do think I'm going to add some material to the sides to cover that gap under the headlights and fender. I also need to relocate the washer bottle tha...
