OK, can anyone give me an idea as to what this is?

the van has a hum that seems to come from the rear end while i drive. My first thought was that it was low on fluid in the differential so i popped the plug off to check but its full.

my abs light is on so now im thinking that maybe my back brakes can be rubbing.

some say the bearings need to be greased and some say i need to change the differential fluid, gasket, etc.

anyone give me an idea where to look first?

Thanks

your humming sound and Im 90% sure is coming from the differential . that is how all diff starts out and eventually need a rebuild .upside of it i I can call it that way ,that you dont have to do a thing if you dont want to right now if you can live with the noise. mine was the same thing and was driving like that for almost two years with no poblems exept the humming .when the axle bearrings and wheel bearring was making the noise to I replaced the hole rear end . of course I could have rebuild but replacing the hole thing was faster and a lot cheaper.and its defenetly not your brakes ,if they are rubbing you can absolutly feel that while driving, van is slower than normally

the humming could also be from the fuel pump-in my old 97 safari awd i know i really heard this when the middle seat was out,,
Hmmmmnnnning, yes that could be it. I have just started to here a humming bird in the back seat, I blamed the wife. But a fuel pump sounds more like it.. 2004 Astro 5000 miles in Mexico , that may just be something.

Thats funny the humming on mine started on wednesday. So I took it into the shop, the checked out the bearings and said the looked really good. So they basically just told me to wait, and see if it gets louder, and the next step would be the rear end. I don't think I've ever done fluid on mine though since I've owned it.

I was just wondering how come you did not feel any of the rubbing couse THAT you should have feel for sure . good thing you got it in time , from continus rubbing they heat up good damaging the brake cylinders too.
