My 2000 awd safari is giving me 2 ABS codes... co223 & co221.

Any idea what these codes are trying to tell me?

Do they point to a specific wheel as being the problem?

thanks!

well i have a partial answer for you. your codes are for an open or short in the circuit so you need to look at your sensors and the wires and make sure there are no breaks or corrosion or any exposed wiring. if that all checks out ok. then you need to make sure you have the correct resistance on the sensors which i do not have that spec but someone probably can chime in with the actual number. if that is ok you need to measure the voltage at the sensor while the van is jacked up and you spin the wheel. if it is less than 100mV then you have a bad sensor so replace it.

the 2000 should be the same as my 99.... FSM says the 221 is right front wheel speed sensor circuit open...the 223 is right front wheel speed sensor signal erratic.
check the wiring and connectors. measure the resistance between terminal "C" and "E" at the EBCM. resistance should be 702 to 1060 ohms up to 40*F,855 to 1230 ohms from 41* to 110* F,1000 to 1440 ohms from 111* to 200*,and 1170 to 1661 ohms from 201* to 302*F (temperatures are for the sensor, not ambient air temp.) wiggle the sensor and harness at different points and see if the reading fluctuates. hope this helps, keep us informed and I'll bookmark the page in the service manual for the time being!
edit...quick note, these resistance values are for the AWD,so anyone else that reads this take note that the 2wd values are totally different!

also, make sure the sensor is secured correctly, and take those resistance measurements at the sensor itself as well

I used your advice and installed a new right side ABS sensor. That's not the easiest job I've ever done! Thanks for the advice guys!

The ABS light went out  but now I have a new even worse problem! :banghead:

When I come to a stop, the ABS system activates in the last 5-10 feet of the stop EVERY time. This is scary because the brakes aren't stopping me as the ABS "grinds away". I have to push really hard on the pedal to get the van to actually stop before I run into the car ahead of me. It happens every single time I stop in forward or reverse.

It NEVER did this when the ABS light was on... before I installed the new sensor. Obviously, the ABS system was not operational then. Maybe I need to just let the new sensor "wear in" for a few 100 miles?

Any ideas folks?

Well, I unplugged the new ABS sensor that I put in yesterday. Now, my brakes work fine. The ABS doesn't come on at every stop anymore. Actually, it doesn't come on at all. I've ordered a sensor for the drivers front wheel and will install that soon. I'll plug the new passengers side sensor in then and hope everything will work as it should. I'll be surprised if I need the drivers side sensor because the ABS light went out after I replaced the passengers side sensor... that would tell me both sensors are OK... but they obviously aren't. :?:

On a positive note, NY state will put an inspection sticker on a vehicle even if the ABS light is on. As long as the brake linings are good and the brakes work, that's all they care about.

any update if getting the 2nd one fixed your issue?
In case anyone else has the same issue... it was exactly as the other member said... the mounting surface on the hub was not clean enough when I mounted the new sensor. I took it apart today and found some slight rust under the sensor. I cleaned it with sand paper, reinstalled everything and it works perfectly now.

You do have to drive the van about 20 feet before the ABS lite will go off.

No more scary ABS coming on when it wasn't needed.
