Does ANYONE know how I can PERMANENTLY disable the DRL's (Daytime Running Lamps) on this van. I can't stand it anymore! I know how to turn them of with the DOME OVERRIDE button, but it is annoying to do it EVERY TIME I START THE VAN! Also, it is not the fuse, for it ALSO controls the gauge cluster, hence it is not possible to start the van. ANYONE, PLEASE ANYONE, HELP!!!

Okay I have to know... WHY do you want to disable them? They are, after all, a safety feature to help other drivers see you. What is it about them that annoys you? Did I miss something?

Sorry I don't know how to disable them, by the way. Just starting cutting wires at random, I'm sure you'll find one that does it for ya.

I agree with Austin.
How can two headlights that shine dimly away from you, drive you nuts?

well, guys, i don't know why you would like to disable the drl but i may have some info to help you out....considering you may be that desperate....sorry for the long post but reading from the helms shop manual:
DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS (DRL): the ambient light sensor is a light sensitive transistor that varies its voltage signal to the body control module (BCM)in response to changes to the outside (ambient) light level. When the bcm receives this signal it will either turn on the drl or the headlights for auto headlamp operation. Any function or condition that turns on the headlights will cancel the drl operation. With the headlight switch in the off position, the headlights will either be turned on or off, after an approximate 8 second delay depending on whether daylight or low light conditions are sensed. The drl will operate when the ignition switch is in the run position, the gear selector is not in the park position and the parking brake is released. When these conditions have been met and the ambient light sensor indicates daytime conditions, the drl will illuminate...(HERE IS WHERE IT GETS INTERESTING) The drl relay is supplied battery positive voltage by the gauges fuse in the ip fuse block. When the bcm requests drl operation, the drl relay coil is grounded by the bcm activating the relay. The energized drl relay bypasses the multifunction headlamp dimmer switch by rerouting ground g110 directly to both low beam headlamp bulbs.
So, it appears to me the the purpose of the drl relay is to provide a ground for the drl...ergo, if the relay is removed the drl should be de-activated..however, the drl relay also provides a ground for the high beam flash to pass and MAY require a jumper from pin 9 to pin 7 to keep this high beam flash to stay activated.
So, if you accept this mission, the sender disavows any knowledge of your existence....I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE!!...you'll have to try this on your own...good luck..

I don't know if it's different for your year, but on my 1998 I just had to pull the DRL fuse. That's it. It's the fuse box under the steering column inside. I don't know why the DRL drove me nuts too, but after having them on for 2 years and finding out it was as simple as pulling a little fuse I've been happy since. If I want to have "DRL" then I just like to have my parking lamps on, not my headlights. Anyway

hello meet, i dug the manual out again and paged through the fuse block diagrams...i couldn't find a drl fuse...the drl relay on the 2003 gets it power through fuse #4 which also controls the instrument gauges...i think there were some changes somewhere in 1999-2003 but can't tell you what they are.....learn something new every day!!!!

I take the "Why" side of this. Especially since in my state(Virginia), and I'm sure others, the law says that if it's raining, vehicles must run headlights("Wipers on,Headlights on"). And I'm lazy. Between the automatic on headlights and the DLRs, I haven't had to manually turn on any headlights in years.

This is for those who decided to give me crap for wanting to disable my DRLs:

1- I have expensive HID lights in my van, I DO NOT want to run them ALL the time.
2- IT IS NOT A LAW HERE IN THE STATES TO HAVE DRLs. In may be a law in a specific state the run your lights in rain or snow, but not here in WI.
3- I am not lazy or incompetent to turn my lights on myself, they are right in front of me... are you the kind of person (the ones who are criticizing me) that is too lazy to use your directional too? THAT REALLY ANNOYS ME, if fact, it PISSES ME OFF!
Here, check this site out, you (once again, the ones who are criticizing me) may ACTUALLY learn something here! http://www.lightsout.org/
I didn't post this to be criticized on WHY I want to disable them, I asked if anyone knew how to! If it is a LAW to have them, everyone who doesn't would get in trouble, RIGHT!?! I just don't like them! Those who do like them, GREAT... good for you, but those who don't, like me, it can be annoying. So, there is my thoughts in rebuttal to your thoughts!

Thank you for the link to "lightsout". I haven't had a good laugh in a long time!
It kinda reminds me of those dumb safety campaigns(duck and cover) from the 50's and 60's.
The whole thing is driven by profit and greed by General Motors? Gimmie a break. I think it would save them a lot of money if they diddn't install elaborate systems.

You can believe what you want, just make sure that you wear a tin-foil hat so the government can't use their "mind-ray" on you.

I sent a LINK to LIGHTSOUT, did I say anything about BELIEVING everything they say? NO!!! All I want to do is figure out how to, if there is a way, to disable my DRL's, THAT'S IT!!! If there isn't a way on my year, fine... I will figure it out another way, from somebody else at a different time. I don't want your input or feelings on DRL's, just looking on how to disable them, DICKHEADS. If you DRL's Great... REALLY, GREAT FOR YOU AND YOUR LAZY *** THAT CANNOT TURN ON YOUR OWN LIGHTS IF YOU WISH TOO!!! Like I said, I personally don't like them. And don't tell me about 'BRAINWASHING'... you are a true moron. How many stats are out there stating accidents, or deaths because a person did not have there lights on during the middle of the afternoon on a clear, bright sunny day! Find it, and send me the link. Or better yet, cash to replace my lights every F****** YEAR! Whatever happened to people driving there cars and not there cars driving them. If it is such a good feature, then why doesn't EVERY car have them, tell my that one smart guys!!! :screaming: :screaming: :screaming: :screaming:

...This would have been a sufficient response.

I am sorry if my post seemed offensive. I fully support doing whatever tickles your fancy as far as modifying your van goes. Please don't take anything that anyone said too personally. I don't think anyone meant any harm. This is the internet folks; text on the screen can easily be misconstrued. More power to you if you successfully disable your DRL's. You are absolutely entitled to do whatever you want.

I have one good reason I didnt like the ones on my wife van. I come home at 1-3 am and park right beside the other tenits bed room window as this is the only spot left at this time of the morning. However the ones on hers were able to be shut off after a visit to the dealer, at first he didnt want to change them but after stopping acrost to road and backing in four nights in a row and parking with the van pointed at his house he changed his mind. I know its evil but it worked!

I don't want to continue this, but I can't let it go. If you had said in the first place that you were running HIDs and you didn't want to burn them all the time, I'll bet that virtually all the replies that took the "why" side would have not even replied in the first place. I used the word "lazy" in reference to myself, and no one called you incompetent or lazy. You need to chill.

If only the title of this post was "Need to disable DRL's due to HID upgrade"... All of this could have been avoided.

It did actually end up being a pretty informative topic. I learned a lot about Daytime Running Lights. Thank you everyone for contributing! If a person could read this topic and evade the negativity you'll actually learn something. :p

I learned something. I learned more about HIDs. I've been looking to upgrade an old motorcycle, but the cost is holding me back. And this thread has made me think about a way to have DRLs, possibly fog lights, and HIDs that activate when the light sensor kicks on the marker and dash lights, killing the fogs in the process. That way, I can still be lazy.

5yck8oi If you can post a wiring diagram I can most likely figure a way to over ride the DRLs that will not be detrimental to the system. Id look it up my self but I am currently busy with more projects than I can handle.
