So the pinout was the same, just different colored wires?

Congrats on getting it working!

I gotta learn how to do this kind of board work and also read electrical wiring diagrams in a much more detailed manner.
Wiring diagrams aren't too too hard to read, but in some places I think that I would get confused by exactly how much current is supposed to be going through some areas, and how much resistance other areas are supposed to have. Would also help to know how the components and switches are laid out.

It seems like a whole nother world of cheap mods (and mods in general) seem to open up with this kind of knowledge.

I don't think i'd want to MAKE computer boards, but working on them to do random stuff would be kinda fun.

Do you guys have any good resources to start with?
Particularly in automotive?

You can also buy them with this mod already done:

They also offer with RCA outs and BT:

Good write up OP, I'll give this a try on my tape deck model.
Ouch, for that price you can have a nice 2DIN navigation unit and the Metra kit.

Hello, I subscribed to this forum to thank AstroWill for this very nice tutorial.
I did the fix yesterday, and it works perfect : )
(It took me a bit of time to figure out the brown line needed to be connected to the ground, which is the metal part of the radio)

Anyway, thank you again very much!

I now have 9 jacks left over that I would happily give away as my give back to the community.
I live in Glendale CA, if you need one just send me a PM and come pick it up.

I was wanting to replace my 12v cigarette lighter with a panel mount USB/ 3.5aux jack.

I have the factory tape deck with remote CD.

I'd love a simple "plug and play" scenario. Anyone more handy with wiring than I am want to make a few bucks putting it together?

Using the cable that runs to the remote cd player makes it even easier. They also make units that go between there that you can purchase, does the same thing https://amzn.to/3imkFw1

Thank you! I've seen that part before.

That requires me to not only keep the CD player, but play a CD in it.

I was hoping for a 3.5 Aux jack that would replace the CD player, install in the 12v cigarette lighter outlet (with a usb) and put a storage pocket where the CD player was.

It seems like it should be doable unless I'm missing something??

The remote CD player has to be there if you are going to tie into the external wiring that runs to the head unit. It communicates with the head unit to let it know that there is a CD in the unit.

Another really nice clean option is to upgrade your head unit to a double DIN that already has the 3.5 aux/bluetooth/USB/Navigation or whatever options you choose. Metra makes a kit for it now.

I have never seen that kit before, thanks for linking to it.
No worries.

It's set up for an aux in and I added the usb fast charge.

Instead of their two separate cables, I bought a combo usb/aux to replace the lighter on the console.

By doing this, is also turns that charging port into a switched location (powered through the radio pigtail).

Since I am able to ditch the CD player, I bought a "storage pocket" to go in its place.

I think I'm at $170 all in.

Seems a little spendy to keep the stock head unit, but I like having more storage, aux and streaming, a switched charge port, hands free calling, a steering wheel mounted remote, and the rear seat controls still working as intended.

Sorry if it's a thread jack to post all this here? Not intended, just being chatty.

It's relevant, even if it's a little more than $3

Are there any heads for sale with the aux jack already installed? I'm not handy at all and would prefer to pay a bit to buy one. I saw the link to 1factoryradio but both are out of stock at the moment.

There are several sellers on eBay that sell factory radios with AUX inputs installed. Note you're gonna spend a whole lot more than $3.

I got a factory cassette radio, bought an adapter and use that to connect my Sirius and phone whenever I want. When this adapter dies, I'll get a new headunit with Apple CarPlay.

My setup is iSimple ISGM73 + PXHGM1

As it was first installed in my '99 - 10 years ago

At some point, the white aux box died from water intrusion on the '02s windshield, so I had to find a replacement. Also, that Sirius was pre-SiriusXM and couldn't get all the channels, plus it had gotten kinda flaky, so this is how it sits in my '05 now:

Not a lot of stock options with an aux jack already installed. The adapters are still available if your set up for a slave unit. Otherwise aftermarket is the way to go. I really like the double DIN metra kit https://www.astrosafari.com/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=140564 and is how I'm going to do my next upgrade, looks great and I like having built in navigation in addition to being able to pair my phone.

trying to wire this up in an 06 silverado, the stereo is slightly different than this but has the same concept, however the connector that goes from cd to main board is a ribbon cable not an actual connector with wires hooked up. im not really sure where to solder onto for the main board i dont see any points for the cd L & R on the main board other than the chip. i tried soldering to the points on the cd player board but that didnt work just normal cd playing
