Hello,

I have a 92 astro with 190k miles. The tranny went out and i had it rebuilt. After reinstalling the van shifts at a way too high rpm and then jumps/lurches, sometimes with kind of bang you can feel, into the next gear. If i hold the gas pedal at a low rpm the engine rpms go real high and the van stays in first until i let my foot off the gas. This happens in every gear although not nearly as bad as from first to second. If i give it a good amount of gas, maybe half throttle, it shifts much much smoother. but if i try to drive slow and normal it bangs/jumps into gear.ive already had a u joint go bad because of whatever this mysterious ailment is. Ive already readjusted the tv cable and dont know where to look to next. any ideas?

Hi mikebenghp

Is their a vacuum line that goes into the drivers side of the transmission which hooks up to a diaphragm? I had that go on me once and it did exactly what you are describing now. If you do have the vacuum line hook up, then check for leaks or diaphragm fault. It's a place to check anyways to make sure. Please keep us updated, thanks.:)

There are no vacuum lines going to my transmission, it all seems to be electric. One thing i forgot to note, sometimes after the van has finally shifted it seems to shift fast through gears. At these time it feels like when you put a manual into too high a gear, like going from 1st to third in a manual without high enough rpm.

The TV cable is misadjusted.

Get it adjusted by a professional...and quickly. It can burn out a new trans fast!

what would you pay for someone to perform this operation. i've already removed the interior trim pieces and dog house before taking it to the shop. According to the chiltons and haynes manuals this isnt a complicated process. I followed them both word for word and it seemed as simple anything can be when working on a car. I'm trying to see how I could have made a mistake.

No reply to that last post is necessary. Van is fixed. Picking it up after work and the guy is going to show me how to adjust the cable correctly for future reference. Only cost me $32. AWESOME! Note- i did remove the doghouse before taking it in, saved some time. Thanks for giving me the kick in the butt i needed to take this thing in.

My haynes manual failed me. The process it desrcibes for adjusting this cable falls short of what is actually supposed to be done. Press, button, slide away from throttle body into housing. Release button then open throttle to WOT. Haynes said thats all there is to it. That is a falso statement and I shoudl sue them. (joke) But apparently further adjustment to the cable is necessary. Stupid haynes trying to destroy my transmission. The blue bomb drives like a dream now. She's got another 100k in her.

I don't no what to check and have already spent a pretty penny in getting it running which the motor runs awsome never dies.
