hi all this is my first post here and yes i've searched around too just want some help narrowing it down.

first of all were working with a 1995 chevy astro awd cl 4.3 vin w with about 225'594.4 miles on it.

things that have been fixed or changed so far:

plugs [platinum], cleaned cap & rotor, found orange wire to fuel pump relay jumped fixed broken wire, changed power steering pump [reman] with res, replaced stuck thermostat with a 195degF one, fixed broken vac line to front heater controls [back one still in the works], changed out right front break line, new pads and shoes + hardware for both front and rear, oil and filter change in engine, air filter, cleaned out egr valve, both idler arms replaced, alternator, battery,

one thing to keep in mind before this astro got on the road it sat for 3 years I've been told has been on the road about one year.

ok problems were having with this astro:

hard shift 1-2 will shift if you let up on gas at 20 miles an hour. 2-3 hard shift till 40 and gas let up. not hearing or feeling 3-4 shift or OD shift now, may still be shifting to it. was not doing this when it first got on road from sitting 3 years and now dos it hot or cold.

2nd problem speedo will go in and out. have wiggled wires to vss and it went away for awhile. when it came back i pulled vss and omh'd it read about 540 ohm's, checked wire they were fine, figured connector so took vss and slightly twisted connections rechecked ohm's now reads 1k ohm's so vss may be bad. Q on vss should it be magnetic stator gear in transfer case is not?

my Q is this bad sensors, bad wiring, or tranny going bad? not sure which way to go at this point. also buying a code scanner this month for both obd 1 and 2 any thoughts as to a good cheap one that will not die from hard use?

schizm out :ugeek:

Ps any ideas as to better tires ie 16" rims and tires or keep stock?

Regarding the tranny,

Have you checked the transmission fluid? Is it burnt? Since it was sitting around for so long, a fluid change is probably in order. Something else that I have noticed with my 700R4 is that it likes a pint over the fill limit on the dipstick.

yea, the fluid smells old and slightly burnt with a little bit of band dust in it. guess a fluid and filter change would not hurt, but I'm trying to keep costs down if tranny's going filter and fluid change is a waste. so?

You will not know if the tranny's going out until after the necessary maintenance. You can't diagnose anything until after you fix what you know is already wrong.

Once you get that done, let us know how it works out. You might want to consider a transmission flush since the van has been sitting for so long.
