has anyone tried putting a shaft seal in their compressor using a regular puller and tools instead of the specialty tools that GM recommends ?

Use the tools. I don't know that you'd get it off with a regular puller, and if you did I imagine there'd be thread damage.

I was going to do the salvage yard, but the local boneyard quoted me 150 bux for a used compressor, I don't know what they've been smoking, but it must be good, lol. O'Reilly has the seal for 26 dollars, and my brother ( across the street) has all kinds of oddball pullers for motorcycles,ATV's and PWC's.I'm pretty sure something over there will work. I don't want to go buy tools that I'm going to use once or twice, and money's an object these days, or I'd just buy a reman.

the puller you need is most likely for the harrison h6 or hs6, ht6 or the da6. Orielleys auto loans tools and it is well worth the time to get them. There is a part that screws into the clutch center and a pusher bolt goes through it. to get the shaft seal out you have to remove the feldt washer and use a long set of snap ring pliers. If you get this far you are about 75% thru a rebuild of the compressor. The only thing left would be to use a regular gear puller to remove the coil, 6 bolts and a good cleaning. ACscource.com has shaft seals as well as compressor overhaul kits. keep in mind yoou will have to take it somewhere to service it when you are done. Simply adding 134 is just not going to do it. The system must be vacuumed down, but i'm sure you are aware of this.

I have a vacuum pump and a/c gauges, so that's not an issue. i've just always replaced the whole compressor assembly rather than rebuilding.

Yeah, i have 3 of em out in the back yard... no seriously, that's a gimme anytime you open up a system to atmosphere, and required for any type of warranty. It's about 32 dollars at the autoparts store. I'm not new to HVAC, though the typical system on a car is somewhat smaller than household or commercial systems. And that Trane out in the backyard has a hermetically sealed compressor, so rebuilding it's not an option.

Do you need to vacuum down the system just to replace the clutch bearing? I am about to do this job for the first time. As with rev les, I would usually do the whole compressor but with money tight, I would rather do the minimum necessary.
