I have a 96 GMC Safari RWD. It has been sitting for a while. The A/C is not working and the compressor is making a noise like a HUGE vacuum leak when it is NOT engaged. When I engage the compressor it runs perfectly quiet. I hooked a pressure gauge to the low side of the A/C system and the pressure drops below 25 when I engage the compressor. When the compressor is not engaged pressure stays up at 55-60. I replaced the orifice tube thinking it was clogged. It still does the same thing. I am prepared to put a new compressor on it but I want to make sure that will solve the problem before I go through the hassle and expense.

what is high side?

if 60 then your low on gas...let the truck sit overnight and in morning bleed about 10 20 sec from high side usual air coes out firs then put some gas in or if you have recovery system take everything out put back in....since you say the compressor turns on then is something else.

The "Vacuum leak" noise was the clutch not completely disengaging. I was able to separate them so it runs quiet. I have since tracked the problem to a leak in the back of the compressor I believe it is the high pressure switch. Is it possible to "reseat" the switch and seal the leak.

Any ideas on how to remove the switch? I removed the spring clip. But the only thing sticking out to grab onto is just plastic and I fear I will break it off if I try to grab it hard enough to pull it out. The only thing I can think of is to charge up the system and turn it on to blow it out.

Hi,
I just removed that switch this yesterday. I just used pliers and gently tisted it and pulled at the same time and it popped out.
I used normal 'slip-joint' pliers and opened them up to the wider setting so I didn't crush the plastic.

I'm not sure that the rubber gasket in side is replacable though.
