when i removed my AC from my 1988 g30 van i cut the front off of the plastic box off and then put a peice of plywood in there with sealer all around the edges , i did this because i needed more room for a dual battery setup!
You dont have to modify this box thats in front of your blower motor , just make sure that if you remove any AC lines , cap them off .

if you think the wood looks rigged up you could use a peice of plastic and then paint it , like cut from the side of a recycle bin tub

I took all my A/C stuff out on my Astro except for the box. I didn't see a huge benefit room wise from removing part of the box. I just like the idea of the condensor not being in front of the radiator anymore. Hopefully its cooling a touch better.

what did you use to cap it off?
reason i ask is i'm thinking about removing just the rear AC in the van i have know and so i want to cap off the rear line
I got this peice in the picture from pick n pull , i was going to screw the one end on and then try to find a way to plug the hole on the other side

I didn't cap off any lines. Just removed what I could and left the rest. Condensor, canister, and like two lines. Just removing the canister gives you some much need room under our small hoods.

From those pictures you would think a good hardware store or parts store(not autozone) could get you a cap for the right size threads to put on where that line hooks up. Or what about a piece of metal inside of that covering the hole the line would run through with some sealer on it.

Well just so you know, I'm a little bored on a friday night so don't worry about these questions.

Why not just leave it there?

and

Why go through all that trouble?

or

who cares?

The amount of room you can gain is awesome. It really opens up the engine bay. Besides that, its dead weight if you don't use it.

What do you use the extra room for, smuggling your girl friend into the drive thru move?

Shoot, leave her at the curb and that'll save a couple hundred pounds. ROTFLMAO

No, turbo. You could also put a second battery there.

why not just go to the junkyard and get a heat only box for the firewall?

between my 95 with no air and my 96 with air:

a- it looks like the non ac box would go on the firewall after removal of the ac box

b- heater lines appear to exit in the same location

c- there is a ton of room to be had there for whatever you want to put there or just to make working on things easier.

If you're lucky enough to find one of those, go for it. I don't know the numbers on how many vans didn't come with factory air but I have never seen one at any of the local yards before.
