My POS Dell N5010 laptop is getting ready to crock, so I'm looking at getting something sorta cheap until I can afford something decent. Is this worth the price. I don't know anything about Lanovos and I will not buy another HP-OS. I used to run AMDs many moons ago, but don't know if there still what they used to be. http://www.neweggbusiness.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834246633

I know very little about laptops, however, a friend of mine bought a Toshiba something or other for 350$ and it is really nice. He bought it off the shelf at best buy. This hp I am on is disappointing.
Not even worth buying a used laptop. What is it that you do with the computer? A bottom shelf model maybe all you need. I can not see spending more than 400 dollars on a pc.
You should get one of those smart phones, then you could surf the web at work.

I only surf A/S honest.

I push mine to the point I'd get a gaming system if they weren't so expensive. The $700 range laptops have served me pretty well the past number of years.

I'm eyeing a Toshiba C650D to, AMD E450 dual core.

I will sell you my Dell. It is on its last leg. It has been on its last leg for a few years now. Sort of why I will not say a whole lot bad about dell computers.
Laptops are one thing I always buy locally. You can take it home and run your fingers over the keys, and get a general fell if you like it or not. If you buy it from Amazon or such you may not like it and then it is sort of a pain to return.
I have returned many laptops for minor things that I found very annoying after a week. No questions asked...

Why not
consider a tablet. Maybe not powerful enough for you. I would just save up and buy something nice, your Dell will last until then, besides, we know you are making the big bucks

For me a tablet would be like trading the Astro in for an 85 Toyota van.

We've had 5 Dells over the years. We had a PC for 5 years, sold it in good working condition. We go an HP that died after 14-15 months. Then we got 2 Dell 1505 laptops, I got like 5 years out of mine then donated it still working. She dumped a glass of water on hers after 3 years and I got her a recon'd Latitude which lasted 3 years. We go these N5010's, (1545's) December before last and I've had trouble with mine for probably last 4-5 months and her's has started to act up the past month or so. I don't think Dell's are what they used to be, at least not the Inspiron's.

This one the screen doesn't come on sometimes, it shuts off by itself, and now the video card is going. If it was just the vid card I'd toss a new one in it. I just need a $300 or so laptop to get me by till I can afford something in the $700-800 range that will last for a number of years.

Lenovo is IBM renamed so to speak when IBM stopped making them it was sold to Lenovo,, that's the jist of it seems they are now quite proprietary and limit upgrades ,, it all varies with the model ,, it takes a bit if study these days to get the best deal on the best product cause they mix and match in so many variations that you have to know what you want then look for a product that has it

HP OS? Hp does not make Operating System in fact they don't make computers ....Foxconn makes HP computers and many Apple computers .. Foxconn makes most of the computers in the world but are made for other companies , a sure bet that Foxconn makes most of the worlds branded computers , they make some of the parts and buy the stuff like CPU memory hard drive from AMD , Intel , various memory makers hard drive makers and assemble them , a recovery disk that is for HP or any other company is just Windows with extra software licensed for a specific series of HP computers cause MS does not want it's original genuine OS to come on a disc with any computer ,, AMD and Intel are the biggest names in desktop computer CPU

you may want to diagnose what exactly is wrong with your computer as it is very likely you have a corrupted video driver or OS ,, very often it is just a matter of doing a clean install of OS and new video driver install ,, or new version of motherboard chipset drivers , sometimes a worn hard drive is the problem ,, being critically specific about what is happening to the pc is critical in saving money ...used computers is big business simply cause people don't know it is easy to fix their own ....the repair price at a shop drives them to buy new

Dell makes some good stuff , I have heard the 1545 has some problems ,, I have had a 1525 for about 4 years and it still going strong full line of extras
their pro line is very reliable

HP-OS = hp piece of shi_

I used to know computers pretty well, through Win 95, after that I stopped fiddling, tweaking, upgrading them. They all pretty much just work and run the software now, not like back in the old 386-486 days. I'm just so out of the loop anymore as far as hardware, chips etc. it's pretty much Greek to me anymore.

I've thought about switching to Mac, but the price is kinda high, and the limited software, which is probably not as bad as it used to be, plus now they have software to make windows base stuff work.

Dell has had good affordable stuff until this 1545. I've updated all my driver files, re installed the OS, didn't help. Noticed last night the the fan has stopped kicking into high speed. I'm updating my file back up onto a stick again today.
If you all don't see me for a while, send out a search party, I could be in a ditch in a crashed laptop some where

Thanx for the input gang

Great time for experimenting with diagnostics to find out what is exactly wrong ... you could have a trojan causing your problems ,, when you see yoru fan not kicking into high gear is not bad as the only time it should is when the cpu is being used extensively ,, it should not be heard otherwise ,as with laptops it is all about conserving battery life .
Most antivirus progs cannot remove trojans ,, the idea that they say they are all in one is a gimmick , they do not provide the high quality stuff in a all in one ,if they did no one would buy it cause the price would be too high so they add in a halfass thing just so they can say that it has a trojan remover when their remover cant get out if its own way ,, ,, it be like buying a 80 piece socket and ratchet set for $4.95 ,,, it has 80 pieces ,,, Taiwan quality and not worth a penny more than $4.95

Well after me D(H)ELL computer turned itself off twice today while I working in CAD I went to Bestbuy and picked up a ASUS X54 for $330. Nothing fancy, but it'll hold me over until Cray comes out with a laptop version of their super computer that I can afford.

And how do I turn off the mouse over AI, can't remember how. The only time it will activate a link is if I'm just wanting to look at the description, but it never works when I want to open the link. I think AI stands for Artificial Imbecile

Often a faulty , aged and worn out power supply is the cause of random power shut downs ,

No, the mouse hover active feature. If I leave my mouse over say close window, it will close the window without my clicking, or hover over a hyper link, it will open it, or if it's a video file it will start playing it. I found a check box that was checked, it was, open when hovering over or something along those lines, I un checked it, but it's still doing it.

The real maddening thing is it won't do it when I would want to, only when I don't.

My understanding of it is it's a feature, so after all that traumatic flicking of your finger across the touch pad to get to a link, open/close window etc, you don't have to click the button, it will do it for you.
