i just bought a 1990 awd astro, and the antilock and brake light are on. i have previously owned a 1990 2wd and a 1992 gmc awd, and they both also had these lights on. is there anyway to fix the abs system when all the wires are in good condition going to the hub assemblies, and the rear end. is the antilock electrical assembly under the hood repairable. i noticed it said it was not, but these lights are irritating, and i would like to solve this problem the correct way. thanx for your help, scott.

Hi kupler7
Their could be a number of reasons way the lights are on. The main reason is a faulty sensor. If you can grab the specific code that set the light, then we can help steer you in the direction for trouble shooting. I don't "believe" the unit is repairable. You could try an auto wreckers for another if you do need one, but I would make certain it isn't just a faulty sensor first. The code will tell you this. Please let us know. Thanks. :)

thanx for writing matrixx. i am getting no codes from the computer. is there a certain way to pull codes from the actual antilock unit. i looked to see if any wires were unhooked or broken, they all seem fine. the other two vans i owned had the same problem that i was never able to figure out. thanx, scott.

Hi kupler7
Yes, some code readers only have engine codes and not ABS and may be the reason why it's not showing up. With this particular year and AWL system, we need the codes. Their is a service bulletin on 2 of them. maybe try NAPA or Auto Zone if they are in your area to have the codes read. You could just clear the codes (disconnect the battery) to see if they come back.

The yellow abs light means you have 4WAL ABS system (Sensor at each wheel). A Red brake light means you have the RWAL (3 Sensor system). What colored light do you have illuminated in the dash? Thanks.

hi matrixx. the anti lock light is yellow. the actual red "brake" light is also on. the red light is also the one when you push on the emergency brake. the only codes i could get from the computer myself is 42 and 43, and these problems have allready been fixed. can napa or another auto parts store pull more indepth codes that i cannot do myself with a paperclip? thanx, scott

Hi kupler7
Any place with a good code reader should be able to help out yes. Some auto parts stores can read the ABS codes but you need to let them know when your phoning around. They may charge a small fee but in the long run would help out a great deal to find out if it's a sensor or unit. I wouldn't go any farther (personally) until I narrowed this down first. Hope this helps. Please keep us updated thanks.

Those lights will also be on because the 50-60 amp fuse is blown. (Under hood).
You can dump lot of $$ and still have unreliable brakes. Do look into the other posts here. On it's best day this abs system is poor. Most are just removing the 50-60 amp fuse. That disables the abs and you have good, old fashion, reliable brakes.A few pieces of black tape across the lights on the dash, your good to go.
