Thats what my neighbor said also. I have herd of this .The only thing is I had the converter off a few weeks ago and it looked good. I was gonna replace it with a magnaflow unit (from the manifold back to the muffler).That way I could replace both the small and the big cats but there wasen't any problem with the factory unit and the magnaflow unit needed a bung welded the rest of the way around(just had 1/2 a weld). Now Thats not to say that it has came apart from then to now. I'm gonna take it to the muffler shop this week and replace the muffler & i'll check it then.I think the muffler has a few small leaks in it anyway.That way i can justify the expense to my wife. thanks for the input !

LOL. I know what you mean about justifying spending that kind of money to your wife. I thought I was the only one that had to do that. If mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. :rofl: Anyhow, I don't know what the inside of these mufflers are like but I have seen some come apart inside on other vehicles. That's not saying your cats aren't coming apart. Anything is possible. I guess I'm lucky. My 96 only has one cat and I just had to replace it a month or so ago. My van had a miss and a flashing cel and it burnt the complete insides out of the cat. I just wish I had gone with a magnaflow instead of an oem cat.

Keep us updated on what you find out.had the muffler replaced fri. the guy put this little torpedo looking thing on and I told him that that was too small & i didn't think that it would be quiet enough he said "o yea it'll be jus a little louder than stock with a little rumble", i thought yea right. I cranked it up it sounded like the original with a hole in it.Didnt like it at all but it was 5:00 so i took it back sat they put another larger muffler on said it was the quietest thing they had.I had talked to him about putting a oem back on it but i think it went in one ear & out the other.The original one had the baffles rattling around so i figured it was time to replace it. just wondering if the smaller muffler will effect the performance? Seems not to run any worse . by the way the back cat looked ok :?:

Never heard of a muffler clog in the van, I will say that the muffler on my 1995 astro is huge.....I know because my dippy daugther borrowed the van a year ago and ran over somthing and ripped the muffler clear off the bottom......she retrieved the bent and beaten parts but i replaced everything.......back to you question....never heard of a clogged muffler or converter ever.

the muffler wasent clogged just the baffles were loose.the guy said they may restrict the flow.But yea the converters do clog and or break apart on the inside. the van did sound "funny" unless it was up on ramps .dont know why, guess the baffles lined back up when it was on the ramps.

Hmm, a muffler rattling, unusual, but possible for sure. Cats are the ones that usually give of a rattling sound when they wear out, which reminds me I have to replace mine pretty quick (it has the classic rattle). Can't really complain though, it's original.

it dosent run any worse , i thought it was the converter breaking up and going into the muffler . turns out when it warms up and everything expands then baffles move around.so the guy at the muffler shop said. how about the "little" converter in front? could it be stopped up? one more question: I replaced the o2 sensors last summer with bosch type was that a mistake? Thought they might need it van being over 100k and all.

Bosch is a good name brand. I have a Bosch O2 sensor in mine on Bank-1 Sensor-3 and it runs fine, The rest are original.
I use the KISS method, if it's not broke, I don't fix (saves money that way).
The Cats "usually" don't go that quickly. If you do hear a rattling sound from it, then yes, it does need to be replaced. Have it checked if you can.

Sounds like the cat came apart or the baffles are loose in the muffler.
As for the O2 sensors, I'd stick to GM. I wouldn't expect to get 100k out of a Bosch sensor.

Your cats should be good for close to 125, 000 miles!
With the two cat system, (pre- and post Cat), they doe a better job with less strain on one unit.
The only thing is they really do bog down the system a bit.
We ripped the OEM muffler off our '03 Safari and replaced it with a 3" Flowtech Afterburner.
Gave it a nice mellow rumble and my wife likes hearing the vehicle running.
Our kids also know when she's coming so they're ready to go!
Even after the muffler change and re-programming the stock computer with the JET unit, my 95 with over 265,000 miles on it will outrun the '03!

i hear you kamikaze, i drove a '95 when i worked for pepsi and it was a completely different animal. It would run circles around this one i have now. it got almost twice the gas milage and had over 150,000 miles on it when i turned it in.I had the muffler replaced sat and now it has a rumble to it. not to sure about it being louder than it was factory. I have a magnaflow converter set to go on the thing but im not sure if im gonna put it on or not. Not sure if i'm gonna keep it or not.There are too many things wrong with it and i have limited finances.
