Hi, I'm looking to buy a new project van, and I wanted the appearance of the astro RS or safari GT vans, if I'm unclear I meant this exterior:

Could I use a shorty van and remove the louvers from a scrapped rs or gt to resemble this? Or would it be too difficult?
There's got to be people on here wishing for this kind of look. :D

Hi Apex
I'm sure anything is possible if you want to put the time and money into it. I believe that picture is the EXT or Extended version or it appears to be. Their are a lot of people here that do those kind of Mods to their vans. :)

That's actually an original RS I found on cardomain.. it was a very (edit)VERY(edit) rare trim only made for a year or two in the 80s. That's chevy made, not a mod, the only thing modded about it are the rims, even the paint is original, all the RS or GT for safaris trim's came with a red stripe on the molding instead of white. I did a lot of research, folks. :)

From these GM salvaged the body and made the shorty vans we all love, but the rear windows are as they appear above.
Just thought I could get some info here.

Hi Apex
Then I misunderstood your question in your first post Apex, sorry about. I thought you wanted the "Appearance" of an RS or GT and that's what I commented on. After looking over the photo again, I "believe" it is a shorty van not an EXT as I mentioned earlier. The picture looks like it was taken with a wide angle setting (or Lens) to give the appearance of it being longer that it actually is.

Their was another foot and half of body added to the EXT behind the rear axle and that doesn't appear to be the case in that particular photo. I have seen 2 or 3 of those vans for sale up here in Vancouver over that last couple of years. So I can't really say how rare they are, but take your word for it for sure.

There was talk about this subject (RS/GT versions) in the old forum you could look over if no one here replies. Just a thought. :)

hey new here. i don't see why that wouldn't work. here is a pic of my RS. its a 1992, i would like more info on them if you've got it. i know it has the much sought after rear sway bar. oh and it has 253k miles on it too. i love it. right now i'm sticking a rebuild 350V8 in it. this way i can back up the Rally Sport label.

Did you find the RPO code for that trim package? My van is not a RS/GT but has a red stripe on the molding. I don't know what that means but now I'm just curious.

GMC used a gold and black decal stripe package instead of red. Mine is a 1991. I recently had to replace the headliner and found out how the louvers were attached. They bolt into the side of the panel behind the side windows. Only short vans with no rear windows were able to have the louvers. I've seen several EXT RS vans and none of them have the louvers, only the trim decals and suspension packages.
