I have a very nice 2wd 87 astro that i would like to make into a 4wd, has anyone done this before and is it possible to convert? I was thinking of putting a newer style fuel injected engine and trans with the awd driveline.

It has been done and those that have done it say don't do it. There are many many differences in drive train, suspension, and steering between 2WD and AWD. You'll be better off in the long run just to find an AWD van you like and buy it.

The only real reason I would do this is if you're looking to do something that is rare combination wise. I've always wanted to do this to a shorty cargo because from my understanding this is a super rare combination with AWD. To start with the AWD wasn't even offered until 1991 which leaves about 3 years to find a shorty that's AWD much less a cargo. Other than that you may try the old ikonboard forums and ask Lockdoc He has done it before I believe and came to the conclusion that IHMB has.

Thanks for the input guys. But i think i am gonna go ahead and see how it turns out. If i find a wrecked awd in the bone yard and drop subframes and the whole works, hydro brakes and steering and all, there shouldnt be extraordinary fab work to do. But i guess i will cross them bridges when i get there.

I wish you good luck, hope it turns out well for you. Try to do a better job of photos than I do.
