OK. I've been doing some searching but still am confused. I'm new to GM vehicles. I have a 1994 Astro AWD, Vin W, and a 4l60E. What V8 would be the absolute easiest swap? Least amount of computer trouble, etc? Thanks all in advance.

Mostly messed around with older fords and mopars. I would really like to do the V8 swap in my astro. The mechanics of it all don't bother me. It' the electronics end of it that I want to go as smoothly as possible. Is there a comparable V8 version of the multiport Vortec V6 that I have now that the existing computer/transmission won't fuss over too much?

The 1994's came with both TBI and center port injections-so that opens up possibilities. With AWD's you have to mod the oil pan.I would vote for a 1994 TBI truck engine and buying a donor truck so you could get the wire harness and computer. The thing is with your w engine, you have a fuel pump that runs way too much pressure(57 to 61 psi) and would have to change that. You would need a z engine fuel pump for a TBI system.I am suggesting a TBI because they are one of the simplest systems to work on.

Yeah-yeah Jim.Carb would be easier, but the thought was for his emissions tests and the yr van it is.Less of a hassle because the van did come with a TBI version 4.3.
Yeah, emissions. I didn't see the OP mention anything about emissions.

Gary, I guess I'm blessed. We don't have emissions tests here.

And if and when Rockford may do that, that's why I bought a van with OBD I.

The other thing is that if you can find a van with a TBI 4.3L of the same year (may be an uphill battle) you can loot the engine harness from it and it's plug and play. That would take care of 90% of the electrical work. You'd probably want to grab the ECU from it as well, then find out what 350 truck used the same # ECU and get a chip from it. (eg TBI 350+4L60E) and install that.

No, there's not a CPI system that will work with it. The other option is to get the # for your computer and cross ref it to a TBI 350 of the same year; GM has a lot of crossover stuff with ECUs, to where you'd just need to change the chip or get a custom one made for the application and you'd be good to go, then modify your harness to the specifications of the vehicle that the chip for the 350 came from.
