1993 Astro AWD. 198k miles.

Seems the replacement chain for the BW4472 Transfer Case is obsolete.... :banghead:

Been searching the last few days, Cobra Transmission, Ebay, GM Dealers, etc.....Nada, nope, discontinued

The van drives ok, just don't floor it from a stop, otherwise the chain will be banging around against the case. I have the van on blocks and checked the slack in the TC, wow, it's loose, old, worn and sloppy. Haven't removed the TC yet, just looking to find parts first. Not being able to find the chain is the problem now. I could find a used unit at the JY, but what am I accomplishing?

I hope I can find the chain, then I can remove the TC and get it fixed up. Anyone have a lead on the Borg Warner 4472 chain #HV-033 ? Thanks, Cheers.

I know the pain! I couldn't find one either when I rebuilt mine with new bearings, the whine was actually louder after I put new bearings in it. Believe it or not most the bearings in there were fine chain was just loose. I would suggest either finding a a unit from a junkyard or getting a np233 and driveshafts from 2000 and up Astro.

Thanks Copper, will keep that in mind as Plan "B". Cheers.

GM part #15634064 replacement chain for the BW4472 Transfer Case.

Not available and been looking around on the net for the last 3 hours, nadda...argh!

Notes from BorgWarner Morse TEC pdf file:

*Important Noise Situation RJ = Rocker Joint RP = Round Pin
GM L Van All Wheel Drive Astro, Safari, and Cargo Applications with BW 1372/4472 Transfer Case - HV032 (Straight Pitch) The HV032 and the HV033 applications should not be consolidated or substituted for each other. The HV032 is a straight pitch design, and the HV033 is a random pitch design. If the rebuilder uses the HV033 Random Patterned Chain in the L Van application, the vehicle operator may hear an unsatisfactory "moan" or "boom" noise from the vehicle's driveline during operation.

Conversely, if the HV032 straight pitch chain (all rounded back links) is used in the GM
S Blazer truck, the Bravada, Cyclone, and Typhoon applications that use the BW 1372/4472
with a random chain design, the vehicle owner will hear a whistle or whining noise.

There is a chain that is similar, except for the difference in chain pins. Random verses Straight. Might look into figuring if it is possible to use the HV032 Chain, from the BW1372 Transfer Case and replace the 2 Drive Gears that are compatible with this HV032 Chain. Might be a long shot, but this chain is available at $63.00

Got a fully rebuilt transfer case BW4472 from this company. according to their info, should have new chains, clutches, bearings, etc..

http://www.transfercases.com/

Might want to give them a call. When I got it, they were about 650.00 with exchange. You can always call them and see if they have any parts still on the shelf.

It went to the JY in November last year (2016) with only about 20K miles on the xfer case. I considered trying to save the Xfer case but the 1999 didn't have the same unit so I didn't bother.

Thanks dchan,

$850.00 reman + $100 shipping and return shipping. $950.00 total for a BW4472

Oh well, I'll keep at it. Maybe it's time to just do a JY swap....hmmmm.

AstroPop, Do you have any idea if the NP233 is compatible with the late first Gen transmission shaft and mounting? I've got a '93. I searched the forum, but could only find people that swapped a NP233 into '96 and later.

Felt the same pain, spent days looking for parts. Gave up and went with the NP233C replacement. Probably won't use the full 4x4 capacity but at least I'll lose the thump from worn out parts in the old 4472. Cheaper and easier anyway. Just fabricate a bracket instead of teardown, clean up, new parts, and reassembly.
The 233 is a fantastic low-cost solution... EVEN if you didn't devise linkage and a shifter.
In fact, if you ever got stuck, it only takes a 9/16 wrench to shift into 4x4... lol.

But you are obviously familiar with my build thread, which shows a very low cost solution to linkage and shifter (the shift cable is the most expensive part). But others have devised even cheaper and effective solutions which work great too. A simple piece of bent rod though the floor can literally shift the unit and still get the job done. There are many different ways to this.

Don't worry about getting fancy.. it's an option you will probably rarely use. My shifter is tucked low nicely and forgotten, not in the way at all, but convenient when needed. I have however, used the 4x4 a few times now.. and love how easy it works.

If you are going to design your own shift bracket and linkage, I highly recommend doing it BEFORE you install the unit... then it all goes in fast and simple.

We look forward to your build! :D
Good luck!

My wife primarily drives this vehicle and highly desires the full-time AWD so she doesn't have to put it into 4WD manually (or forget to take it out of 4WD when appropriate), so for now, I am planning to baby the current 4472 until I can find a "low" mileage junkyard replacement 4472 (or Craigslist parts van). Eventually this world is going to run out of working 4472s, and I'll work out a solution then.
If I have any updates to the project, I'll post them on my other thread: https://www.astrosafari.com/viewtopic.p ... 9&t=136746
If anyone DOES find a supplier with a stash of 4472 chains, please shout loudly!
Thanks!!
