Hey Guys

Are the brake lines that run on the rear axle of the Safari the same as what is on the pickups ? Any chance of finding pre-bent lines that run along the axle - is there a GM part number for these lines ? I could bend them myself but if they are availabe I am going to make my lif easier

OK

So here is what came off the van

It was just falling apart in my hands #-o

CRappy ol'e brake hose

Ugly lines

THis is the new SS hose

it's nice to have a place to work- lots of tools and heavy equipmen- my safety yellow Corvair fit right in

New Cunifer line ( copper-nickel-iron, used on military ships for hydraulic lines in saltwater)

One rear line was usable as a pattern

My helper, Ronnie JR, son of the shop owner

Cunifer bends by hand and doesn't collapse

I used this PE tube where the lines clamp to the axle to protect it from chafing

In the flaring tool (don't forget the fittings )

On the axle

A flare

NOw tomorow I get to run the 3/16 lines from the rear hose to the front , should not be too difficult

this is exactly what im dealing with. i went to the parts store and got a foot of line. under the van it was only leaking in one easy spot in the rear. so i replace it and pump the brakes.... well the rear isnt leaking anymore but sure enough 4 or 5 little holes in the front started pissing fluid all over the place in random spots. i said "i aint dealing with this crap" and proceded to rip out everything from the prop valve to the front calipers. well maybe not everything. i got lazy and decided to leave about half of it in its place. plus most of it was so rusted i couldnt get it to move. tomaro i get to go back to the parts store and get both hoses and enough line to do it all. ...oh and another rachet. i swear i left mine in the van 2 days ago and now i cant find the thing. i think my van ate it.

you got it made though. i got ramps and a wrench and socket set. nevermind the rust, brake fluid in your eye stings!

good work though. whered to come across that T-fitting? local parts store didnt have them.

I just had to replace all the lines on my 97. Could not get bleeders to open on the front calipers had to replace them aswell. I want to call everyones attention to their fuel lines. If you replaceed brake lines or are going to you should do your fuel lines as well

I have an 86 Astro and was wondering if anyone would happen to know what fittings and what type of flaring is used for the rear brake lines on this thing. I've been to every local part store and nothing shows up in the systems. I even went to our local GM Parts dealer and they just shrugged their shoulders at me. I already know that the lines will have to be basically made by hand since there is no prebent OEM replacement. I really need to fix this ASAP since my state inspection is beyond due. With an 86 you will be SOL on prebent lines, but I am pretty sure prebent is available for the newer Astros and Safaris. At the dealer where I work, we got a complete rear line assembly(fuel and brake lines together) for a 93 Cavalier, so it would stand to figure that they would be available for an Astro/Safari. And if I am correct, the price was extremely reasonable, something like $130 bucks. This may cost more than bulk tubing, but to eliminate the hassle or bending, flaring, reflaring after forgetting to put fittings on(yes, I'm guilty, a few times), etc, it is well worth the few extra bucks.

I will look into this tomorrow, and if they are available, will get part numbers and prices.

P.S. I just realized this was an apparant dead thread until today. If I find the info on the lines, I will post in a new thread.

I'm finishing replacing all my brake lines this afternoon. The rear line from the wheel to the diff is 3/16" standard fittings. if your gonna replace one of those lines you may as well replace the wheel cylinder, because the bleeder screw might be froze and snap off when you go to bleed. I thought i was just gonna do my rear lines but everything was so rusted i have replaced every brake system component in my 87.
Good luck
