I have a '99 Astro LT that I'm converting to a camper van so I've pulled out all the interior trim/panels in the rear. The van came equipped with a rear seat audio control in the panel behind the driver's seat. Since unplugging that unit my rear speakers have stopped working. I've been able to temporarily plug the rear seat audio control unit back into the wiring harness to confirm that's the cause. I'd like to get my rear speakers working again but I don't want to have to use the rear seat audio control unit (which I don't need nor have a space for). At minimum, I'd just like them working with the stock stereo but I'm seriously considering replacing the headunit which seems a bit pointless if all I'll have working is the front speakers.

Is there a way to bypass the rear seat audio control unit without having to run new wiring to the rear speakers? (FYI, I've removed the speakers in the dutch doors completely. I'm just leaving the ones in the rear pillars.)

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Greylin,

I have reviewed the owners manual for your 99 LT. It seems to me that the section on the aux control is going to be key. See below statement:

PWR: Press this button to turn the rear seat audio
system on or off. The rear speakers will be muted when
the power is turned on. You may operate the rear seat
audio functions even when the primary radio power
is off.

From this statement, I suspect that when the power light is not illuminated that you have rear speaker sound.

I have also included this link which will give basic wiring info.

My thought is that there is a wiring plug-in to the back of the radio to add the LT features. Perhaps, it is a sort of piggy back configuration? You will no doubt have to pull the radio to determine whether this is in fact the case or not.

I will continue to search the web for an answer. Hopefully someone has already dealt with this and will chime in.

Best of Luck, Jim

Can you take pics of the harness? I did this with my 96 Nissan Quest (converted it to a work van and pulled the interior panels) and when I pulled the rear controls, it was as easy as soldiering in a jumper across the terminals on the connector. I don't know if the rear radio controls are inline with the rear speaker output from the main radio but I imagine that this is the case.

Let's see if I can do this right.

The inputs wires for the left are Brown (+) and Yellow (-)
The input wires for the right are Dark Blue (+) and Light Blue (+)

The output wires for left are Brown/white (-) and black (or possible brown) (+)
The outputs wires for Right are Dark Blue (+) and Black (-)

Now going with that you should be able to do the following.

Connect Brown wire (+) to Brown/White wire (+)
Connect Yellow wire (-) to black (or brown wire (-)

Connect Dark Blue wire (+) to Dark Blue wire (+)
Connect Light Blue wire (-) to Black wire (-)

That should allow the headunit to control the rear speakers as well as the front speakers. It should also allow you to remove the rear control completely (make sure to insulate wires if you do that)

Now, Please check the wiring first. I could be wrong on what I read in the linked PDF. Double check everything and know everything about this task before attempting to do it. If you mess it up and cause your van to burn, blow fuses, have flat tires, bust a window, honk the horn, drive on it's own, or anything bad that can happen, I, nor Astrosafari.com, or it's members are responsible.

(I could have went a lot deeper with the disclaimer, but decided to be nice and cut it short)

This is terrific. Thanks for all the input. The new head unit arrived yesterday (Pioneer 2200 UB) and I'm going to attempt an install today. I'm just running out to pick up a dash install kit and wiring harness now.

Will keep everyone posted. Thanks again.

I don't know , as I DO have every possible wiring diagram available pertaining to every year of Astro and many others cars as well , as far as the radio goes there is basic, premium with rear control and without rear control , if that has without rear control you should have given it as well as the one with rear control so they can be compared so the person eliminating the rear control has something to compare finished alterations . :)

Anytime Andy,

But giving back is more about just being here and partaking in the madness... A common love for the AstroSafari, that no doubt will be looked upon by our Children and Grand Children as unnatural.

LOLz, Jim
