I've been following the "hotrodding the v6" thread and have been considering an ignition upgrade. My 99' rwd still has the stock cap, rotor, ignition module, etc. with 111,000 mils , so even if I decide to stick with oem, it's time for a change. I noticed on MSD's application guide that they have a direct plug in harness (8877) for use with the 6AL (6420) control box and 8231 direct replacement coil. However, they don't list any distributor for the 95+. I'm wondering why the 8367 distributor that works for 95 and older won't work on the newer models, especially if your going with their controller?

Here's the link for the part in question: http://www.msdignition.com/product.aspx?id=5367&terms=8367

and here's what msd recommends for the 96 and up:

http://www.msdignition.com/product.aspx?id=5811&terms=6420
http://www.msdignition.com/product.aspx?id=4687&terms=8877

So far my van has volant intake, restrictor plate removed from throttle blade, magnaflow cat, and doug thorley dual exhaust.

That distributor will not work on the newer vans. The shaft of the distributor is a different length.

What other mods have you done to your van?

I called MSD's tech line and the guy said it wouldn't work because "it's a vortec engine", some kind of computer compatibility issue. My van has volant intake, restrictor plate removed from throttle blade, magnaflow bolt on cat, and doug thorley dual exhaust.

I would just get the Delco stuff for the tune-up and not worry about it. One thing you have to remember about aftermarket performance parts is that they are built more for performance than longevity.
