Alright so today I decided to have a look at the drivetrain because of a 'Service AWD' light popping up on my dash, Well I checked everything out and it looked like everything was working and didn't look damaged, Last thing I looked at was the transfer case, decided to give it a light bump with my hand and boom, the Drain bolt goes flying off and fluid is everywhere.
I don't have any spare fluid and I won't be able to get any till maybe Saturday this week.
Anybody know how to stop the case from engaging, maybe like removing electrical connectors?

btw Astro is 2005.

Wow! How lucky it came loose while at home and parked....That would have been a disaster in most any other situation!

PULL THE ATC (Automictic Traction Control) FUSE UNDER THE HOOD
This will prevent it from engaging.

But know this.. everything inside the transfer case is still turning (on both ends)
There is also "preload" on the clutch-packs regardless.
These clutches may grind against each other in turns
It may be damaging to run the case without oil (in fact its probably likely)
The temporary upside is that the internal parts are still somewhat lubed.. but not for long
I wouldn't move it far.

Even regular ATF would be better than nothing until you get the correct fluid

Better yet... DON'T DRIVE IT
(you're just asking for more trouble)

Good luck

Oil has changed quite a bit, for the newer trannys, and I am 95% sure some of the newer fluids would work fine, and 1 that defiantly would. But you will not like the prices, lol. But, if anyone wants the info, let me know, will post.

Yep, back then, type F gave GM tranny's a firmer shift, as had less anti-friction additives. That stuff could make a real mess out of a transfer case that has clutches, lol! But, is now all moot, since atf is no longer made from ***** whale oils.
