Couldn't find anywhere else to post this question, so hopefully someone might be able to help...

My 98 AWD has a rattling metallic sound that happens when I apply the brakes while moving in reverse. Sometimes the noise will keep going after the van stops but when I release the brakes the noise goes away. Seems noisier when turning the wheel while going in reverse and applying the brakes. I suspect CV joint, but it doesn't do it in forward at all. Also recently started a moaning kind of sound on the road, pitch drops as van slows down, not sure if it's related to the other noise or not. Van has 110K on it. Runs great, shifts fine, but this noise is scaring me... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The rattling sound could be a few things. A loose exhaust shield, broken exaust hangar, or even a bad trans mount.
Can you duplicate the sound in the driveway? Maybe have some else drive while you listen outside the van to pinpoint the area it is coming from.

As far as the moaning noise goes, could be diff bearings or a bad wheel bearing.
Maybe you are lucky and it's tire noise!
