Can you believe this crap! Been working on my 95 Astro AWD that has been plagued with all kinds of wiring issues from some mad butcher. To make a long story short a relay has disappeared from the engine compartment driver side firewall above and left back side of fuse box. I'm positive there was one there 2 weeks again when last working on this bugger. Has 5-6 wires with plug/socket just hanging! Definitely not the fuel pump or oil pump relay that are located on the right side above heater box. Can someone with the same model & year post the relay part number and what it's purpose is? I was suspect on why this friggin thing wouldn't start today, just fire up and die, time after time. I'm hoping this MIA relay is the reason for no start and when the suspect culprit's van from the rural area I live in comes back home I'm sure his *** will be switching the relay. Can you believe :screaming: how stupid crack heads are! One other van in the friggin area besides his and he choses mine. Sorry for venting guys n gals but reality really bites today, especially when I picked him up hitchhiking this morning. LOL.....

That would be pretty good luck on HIS part though, hehe....get picked up hitchhiking by someone with the part he needed to get his ride rolling again!
Aside from that, I looked on my '95 above the battery and the only connector I see any near near there is a rectangular 10 wire plug, and it goes to the electronic cruise control box. Hope this helps, and good luck!

Thanks for the info rev_les but its the wrong connection you mention. I do have that particular rectangular 10 pin but not in use, no CC. Guess I'll take a picture like others mentioned. I'll be back......

I looked at the schematics that i have for 1995 and there was no pink orange blue green wired relay , the schematics i have is for 1995 TBI systems , what do you have?
would'nt hurt to put a relay on there , ussually the relays are all the same , for example if you went to pick n pull and got a fuel pump relay it would probally work there too , just make sure you visually inspect it first to make sure its correct

Thanks webcat for the fedback. My gem is a 95 CSI and I'm not having any luck with the schematics in my resource pile.

The wires are pnk/blck stripe,
drk blue/white stripe,
light green/blck stripe,
solid black and solid orange.
Will have a look n try at a few other relays I have lying around. Thanks again dude!

Well after digging deeper I discovered that the connector is Oval shaped, not square as the relay normally is. So now that all this attention is directed to this mystery connection I did get the van to fire up with lots of cranking, she's all warmed up and moved it across the yard with same issues after changing VSS Buffer/DRAC. No speedo, brakes lock real hard throwing you forward at any speed, (creeping or moving), and No Trans. Shifting. Oh yes to add to the events, the fuel pump is constantly running. I would guess she surely is trying to Limp Mode home and if it don't change soon it will limp to another home. God hates a quitter but a Jokes a Joke. LOL!! Guess that's the price we pay for buying dirt cheap DOA, surely wish it didn't come with all the baggage and perhaps if it were already painted Yellow, could be another story.

Well since raising everyone's eyebrows I may as well let you know that this missing relay is a "Brake/Shift Interlock Relay". Replaced this bugger with one from Wrecker and the Van is running with Speedometer, Anti-lock Brakes, Transmission (kinda) shifting , and Instrument Cluster lights all working.

WOO-HOO!

Need to sort out why no shift into second gear but, drive and OD work well. Will drop thetranny fluid and filter and throw inn some lucas and maybe it will free something up.
This van sat for many years abandoned by others that tried to make it run but just weren't "old school hard headed stubborn enough" to make it run down the road. Need to transfer some plates and insurance next day or two and see what else comes up.

Truly satisfying feeling coming inside with something accomplished today. LOL :layrubber:

What a nice turn of events! You were going to find it a new home and now you have become hardheaded enough yourself to hang on to her and give her what she deserves.....some attention.

Is it still taking a lot of cranking before she runs? If so, keep an eye on your oil pressure guage and see if it starts up once oil pressure picks up. If so, check out your fuel pump relay.
Hey Moneymaker thanks for the tip. "So far" the van starts on the turn of the key and runs real smooth. Oil pressure appears good from start and maintains @ 275+ kpa(?) all the way through to running Hot. I'm thinking this ghosts are outa the machine now. LOL, will run it a few days after changing out trans fluid and see WTF comes up next before I sell it.

Ahhh, the joy of making headway, lol.....I bought the '95 more for parts but the wife liked it, so I set out on a long arduous journey un-doing the damage a previous owner had done,so I could figure out what was originally wrong with it that they were trying to fix.Glad to hear you got her going!

Needed a long rest away from this bugger and unfortunate I didn't sell it.

The saga rolls on and now have plenty of experience on whats not wrong with the beast. Back to square 1 with the fuel tank. The vans not shifting and anti lock brakes not working due to a bad connection within the tank that was over looked when pump was replaced.

Went through every friggin wire back to tank and was stumped why it wants to run in limp mode. My suspicion came about when watching the gas gauge bounce erratically while buddy shook my wire, LOL! Anyway there was a bad ground that was cleaned and repaired, moved on to tank connection and still no change.

Got Buddy to pound on tank and BINGO, the gauge went nuts. Removed tank again and the wires are all fine with the exception of the 2 going to sending unit are a little corroded and slightly loose on the spade. Tightened the smaller and having troubles with the other. I have 2 options I'm thinking of; replace wires which are handy, or get another complete assembly from wrecker. Now this being said I'm still not convinced my black cloud will lift with simply changing wire. What do you all think about the sending unit being NFG?

Anyone have idea's on testing the sending unit while powered up sitting in fuel, preferably not the tank so one can see whats happening? What about the fuel lines, should they be immersed in fuel too?

Preferably in an open area to prevent fume buildup, with pump out and away from tank, unplug fuel pump relay so pump won't engage, turn key to on, sweep test sender arm while watching gauge. A fire extinguisher close by is recommended for any fuel related testing.

So the van is not shifting at all? Or just under certain conditions?

Is one or both of the brake idiot lights lit?
