Hey guys, I'm looking to dump my a/c and go with a single elec rad fan in the next month or so and was wondering if anyone had any experience switching over to one of these pumps or if they will even work. Would you recommend an alternator upgrade to cover the added draw of fan/pump combo?

PS: It's a 95 SLT Safari AWD 4.3 auto

I'm curious why you would want to do that? If its horsepower your after there are way better mods you could do before an electric fan setup and electric water pump. My advise save your money until a real need comes up for your Van.

Trade the mechanical fan for an electric one, in a heartbeat. Trade the mechanical water pump for an electric one, never. If anything was to happen to that electric water pump (or its electrical circuit), your engine is done and your stranded. I think you can find better uses for $400. :2:

One side effect of an electric fan that bit me is there's much less airflow over the alternator .. at idle, pulling a 50A load (I do amateur radio stuff in my Safari), I melted it down after an hour or so :(

I ended up putting the clutch fan back on for now, looking at external fans to cool the alternator (or maybe a HO with pulley-mounted fan

Wow, I have never heard that one before. What kind of battery were you using when the alternator melted down?

Talked about it with a guy at at the vette/chevy show this weeked. He had one on his hot rod. He said it limited his time on the highway and to remember that an electric pump does not increase impeller speed with engine speed like a belt driven one.

Well, if you look through my other posts you'll see I use a 2000 Safari as a dedicated radio van .. I have 4 Trojan T-105s in there in series-parallel, good for around [email protected], and I charge them from the alternator (usually at speed between stops, but sometimes while stopped and operating)

I'm planning on remote mounting the diodes this winter, which will eliminate that problem ;)

The water pump looks pretty, but what do you do with the serpentine belt once you remove the WP pulley? I would save my money on this one. Stock works very nicely, thank you.
