Ive picked up a 2002 AWD astro with 400,000km that had a seized motor as a project. Ive taken the motor apart (looks like previous owners never did maintenance of any kind.) and found that the thrust bearing spun, so the cranks out getting machined. ive also got the block, heads and pistons out to be hot tanked and magged. at this point I know ill be replacing gaskets, bearings, and the oil pump (figure it was probably involved in the spun bearing.) Due to necessity but also some number of the timing components(dont know what all needs to go yet but the cover says some amount of it needs to be replaced), rings, water pump and fuel injector harness. Does anybody have any advice or recommendations for things that i should look into replacing while im in this far? any and all advice is appreciated thanks for the help.

Rings, rod and main bearings, you may want to ask the machine shop about line boring if it spun a bearing. Cam bearings, oil pump and pick up tube, replace the stock cam too since it is most likely worn. Freeze plugs need to replaced as well. May as well replace the water pump too. And check the motor mounts while the engine is out, much easier to replace before it goes back in. Mark

I hate to be Debbie Downer but with that many miles and apparently poor maintenance, chances are you aren't going to get good news from the machine shop. At minimum it may need to be bored because after literally billions of RPMs over its life the geometry and combustion forces causes the bottom of the cylinders to become oval shaped and the piston skirts to weaken. That means new pistons.

If you spun a bearing the crank is probably scored and will need to be turned or replaced.

Personally I would either try to find a used 4.3 that runs or throw the money at building a V8.
