I would like to get rid of the horizonal bars with bow tie
and replace the grille with some kind of expanded metal.

Nice. That would be a cool mod to be like a Yukon Denali type grill. I think it looks cool.

looks cool. I would just cut out the bars (for air flow), except 1 or 2 in middle (to keep some strength), and use the outside frame for mounting.

Yea it really looks cool , kinda that off road jungle safari look , I bet with some patience it can be done . I have seen an industrial grade diamond mesh that would be a great fit as it looked just like that

You've inspired me! I'm doing this. I got some of that metal mesh and a few bits and pieces of metal, then took off my stock grille for reference. I got a good start today. I hope to have it finished by Friday (I don't have much shop time).

I've actually been putting that off for a bit... I have most of it finished, but there's still a bit of work that I need to do on the framing for it.
