hello all,new to this board, first post.have any of you had the faulty gas guage where it usually stays pegged on full but everyonce and a while it moves to half or a quarter but goes back to full.i have a 97 astro with 124xxx miles.ive had it for 3 weeks now and plan on eventually changing the fuel pump anyway just for peace of mind.just wondering if it was a common problem/fix besides changing the sending unit.btw, this is my third stro, first was a 99 then i had a 96,now a 97.all coincidentally white.

I just bought a 99 astro and mine is not working either. I was talkin to some of my buddies today and one suggested that maybe my cluster is bad since my electrical gauge isn't working either. other than that I don't know.

a quick test for the guage is to sweep test, unplug the harness at the tank and jump the sender wire to ground. than jump sender wire to 12vdc and the guage should go from full to empty if your guage is working. if not than the guage cluster may be suspect.

I just bought a 99 Safari and think I have the same problem. The needle vibrates at a blur in the pegged position. It sweeps up past the full line and "bounces" at the "F". I've now run the van for 100 miles and the needle has come down to the full line, still vibrating, but seems to stay higher sometimes. I record my mileage on every tank anyway, and if the tank is 25 gallons, assuming 15 MPG (which should be on the low side), I should get 375 miles per tank. So if I refuel at 275 miles on the trip odometer, all should be well and I can see how the gauge behaves as the tank empties. At that interval, I can get as low as 11 MPG and still make it to the gas station, and I think I've been averaging over 16 MPG.

New here. Just bought a 95. My fuel gauge does not work either ( just vibrates). Aldo the temp gauge never rises. Sounds like a common issue with these vans.

Do the sender wires have a seperate connector than the pump. If not which wires are for the sender

Thanks,
Mike

This gas gauge thing must be a common problem with these vans.My former employer wsa getting rid of 2 delivery vans (both 97 Safari AWD,300K+ miles). I bought one and a co-worker bought the other, and neither gas gauge works.Mine ,however,"pulses "( half,3/4, half,3/4, etc)when I use either turn signal.Mind you it works once in a while after I fill the tank; then about 20 minutes later it will lay on E.At this point I am just living with it and writing my mileage down to figure my 'economy' (yeahright).

The tank in my 95 is easy to drop, I've had it out twice. Then again, my bolts & straps aren't rusted up either. The baffle in my tank is cracked and deforming, keeping the float reading around 3/8. I smacked it with a hammer & pry bar last time I had it down, I hope that tweaked it enough. I've had the van for 3 or 4 months, you'd think I'd have put more than $10 gas in it at a time by now to see if the rest of the gauge works!
