I am starting to notice a gas smell now that i can drive with the windows open. I got the van in the winter from a neighbour and I know he had the Fuel pump changed in the fall. I can not see any leaks in the line so i assume it is either from the exhaust or it may be a bad connection from when the pump was replaced?
How far can i lower the gas tank to check the top part for leaks safely before worrying about damaging hoses and wire harnesses? The smell seems to come from the back or middle section of the van. I assume there is no way to look at the top of the tank without lowering it? With my old van ( Mercury Villager) the clamps that connected the rubber hoses to fuel rails would sometimes leak and need to be tightened, but i can not see them and like I said this smell does not seem to be coming from the front of the van? Any other places i should be looking?

Thanks in advance

The tank has a shield on top of it, you can't really see anything without dropping it. If you plan on dropping it might as well disconnect it as to prevent messing anything up. The fuel lines and wiring harness are fairly easy to disconnect before you lower the tank. Looking underneath the wiring harness is obvious. The fuel lines have disconnects that you can see between the drive shaft and the tank once the plastic gas tank shield is removed.

The 2" hose that connects the tank and filler neck might have been cracked during the fuel pump replacement. Grumpy's is currently cracked and leaks if I fill the take more than 3/4 full.

Any possibility that you are just running rich? Any soot around the tailpipe or quarter panel? Probably easier to just pull a spark plug and make sure you're not running rich than dropping the fuel tank.

Could be like my Van that has a leaky fuel pressure regulator and return lines inside the plenum. The Van smelt of gas cause it was spitting fuel out the tailpipe.
