The VA has improved drastically. They used to be pretty dismal for the most part.
It still varies depending on regional management but it's mostly far better than it was
in the 80's- early 90's. The government is one of those things where everyone talks about
taking care of veterans but nobody wants to sign the check.

Hey all...this is actually my first post on the forums. Just been reading around for awhile learning about our great rides. I joined the USAF at 18 years old on 9/3/2002... almost a year after 9/11. Did basic in San Antonio then training in Wichita Falls, TX, and Dover, DE. Ended up stationed in Fairfield, CA at Travis AFB. Was a C5 cargo plane crew chief, did 4 years. Been a couple places, Guam, Rota, Jordan. Not currently enlisted anymore after honorably discharging, but if I could do it again I would do 20 years. Thanks to all of you great Americans for your service... we wouldn't be here without you.

Thanks for your service! Where do I apply to be included? My illustrious military career began because I hated school LOL. As a senior I absolutely knew I did not want to go right into college but already had a pretty solid work ethic (started working close to full time at 15) and wanted a challenge. The thing is I have the attention span of a knat, in hindsight I probably have ADHD. Anyway I looked into the military and decided to see if the Air Force might have something I would enjoy, talked to the recruiter, took the test......scored high, he said you can pick most anything and gave me a book to look at. Most of the career fields open to women back then were fairly boring, at least in my 18yo eyes lol until I stumbled on Air Traffic Control. Hmmm this looks pretty interesting, I talked to a few people and decided this might be able to hold my attention. Went to basic Jan 1976, then tech school at Biloxi Ms, after graduating tech school was asked to stay on as an associate instructor so I did that for several months. First assignment was in Abeline Tx, only place I've ever been where it rains mud...no really it does. Spent 2 years there, married a guy I met in tech school joined him at Robbins AFB in Ga, got out in 1981 went in the FAA in 82. My first place in the FAA was as a controller at Miami International, spent several years there, then up in Ga, then down to Orlando where I spent the last 20 years of my career. I LOVED being a controller and I got to retire at age 50  lasted an entire 30 days before I was asked to do a contract tower gig at Kissimmee airport, so all told about 40 years of air traffic even tho the contract tower was a sweet 4-10 days a month gig. I used to do the EAA fly in show at Sun-n-Fun in Lakeland Fl, it was a hoot! We got to throw out a lot of rules and really jam some airplanes in, for departures I was out on the runway centerline with batons flogging depts out either side of me....makes your heart pitterpatter.....lololol they don't let the controllers out on the runway anymore the big wusses

I joined the U.S. Army (active duty) September of 2000, I was 22. Signed on a 67S Oh-58D Helicopter Maintainer. A few years later the MOS changed to a 15S. I left February of 2006 due to a TBI. I'm now medically retired and love life. Spent all of my time with the 1st Cav. based in Fort Hood, Texas, but saw my share of deployments, both domestic and foreign. I took part in retrieving parts of the space shuttle Columbia that exploded over Texas in 2003, and assisted the U.S. / Mexico border patrol in Joint Task Force 6 stopping illegal drugs from entering the country. At the time of my separation I was a CPL E-4, waiting on a slot for SGT promotion, with hopes of going to flight school. It was some of the best years of my life, had the opportunity to see some amazing things, met the pilots of air force one while president bush was vacationing on his ranch in tyler, texas. Spent 2 years as a command driver, first for my First Sargent, then for my commander. I sure do miss those glory days

It was 1982 and thanks to Stripes the previous year, I enlisted in the USAF, believing it would be hilarious. It was only partially hilarious.

I was active duty for 6 years (flight ops in SAC, and intel), walking like an Egyptian and Wang-Chunnging my way through the 80's in uniform. I was stationed in Hawaii and New Hampshire - fraternizing, cohabitating, and committing inappropriate sexual advances upon my co-workers on a scale that would enrage any current Women's Studies professor. This culminated in my marriage to a fellow barracks mate in '87 - completely involuntary on her part, as I was an NCO and she was only an E-3. She now outranks me in all meaningful categories.

After 2 years as a filthy, Harley-riding dependent husband, I cut my hair and did a 5 year stint in the ANG as a Satellite radio repair/operator. I spent a lot of this enlistment in the mud in foreign lands, questioning my decision-making skills.

I later worked for the Army as a civilian gov't employee - as chief of an Army Corps of Engineers communications department...a lofty position which entitled me to legally murder myself at a moment's notice.

Joined US Navy to get away from home when I was fresh out of high school... Got out years later and went home with all kinds of problems. Medical... all kinds. Happy to be living life the way that makes me happy now.
