I got a system update notice, so I clicked ok. When my system came back up it not only required a password to get on which I never set up, it also listed a window for "other users" which wasn't there before the update. I disconnected the internet and it took some wrangling, but I got into safe mode. Got a password now plus this ASUS has face recognition protection, so I've got that set up.

You should look up the update and see if there are any known problems with that update ,, sometimes updates themselves can cause problems , I never ever just let updates run ,, first read what they are for and if you need them ..the windows folder can get very bloated with unneeded updates and slow the pc down

you can try System Restore and go back to where you were before the update

it a good idea to setup an additional account and use it , that way if you do get a virus or hacked you can enter into the Administrator account and fix things ,, in the Admin account , it won't be hacked if you not logged into it ,, if you are someone can take control of your pc cause then they will have Admin rights if they take it while you logged into Admin account

I'm on the old POS laptop now.

It's still acting up, it turned off, then a blue safety shut down window pops up. I also discovered that my security was turned off and I couldn't turn it back on, had to do a system restore to be able to get into safe mode.
But last night I dumped the virus program that it came with and put MS defender on, which I've been using for a for a few years with no problems. After that install I did a full scan and made a recovery disc and I know the security and firewall was up and running.

I lke the idea of a admin account, I'll do that, thanx

Think I'll take it back to Bestbuy tomorrow and have them take a look seeing it is only 3 days old.

Good idea Jasen. Be sure to do that. Maybe just exchange it for a new one.

Jasen try AVG security also.Even the free version is outstanding.I'm a cheap <>[email protected]#$$^Y sometimes.Always use Admin and run the anti virus on start up in auto mode.It may take a few more seconds, but its worth it.

AVG was the last one I used, then started having problems with it, so went to MS defender. Seems every few years what ever I have starts letting things through, minor stuff like ad and malware, then I find something new.

Just to be sure you understand correctly ,, if you only have one account ,,that will be the Admin account ,,, so you need to setup another user account and use that one and only use the Admin for when you are doing repairs or other upgrades that require Admin rights ,,

The reason is that if you get hacked , the hacker will have Admin rights and can control your PC
If you are using a "USER" account and get hacked , the hacker will not have Admin rights as they will only be able to use the "user' setting you have approved for that user account ,,

it is preferable to do a "clean install" then setup the two accounts , that way you know for sure there is no virus of any kind on the PC ,
if you got the BSOD Blue Screen of death which is a Blue screen with a bunch of text and does not boot up completely into Windows,, there will be an error code about 7/8 down the screen and look something like 00xsc88r5nm ,, plus some other combination of letters and numbers ,, the first one is the code you can google to find out what it means .. usually a file missing or corrupted ,, really the best thing is a clean install from a MS Genuine DVD if you want Win 7 , the brand recovery discs work but are usually made for a certain model of computer
if you go into Computer Management you may find a recovery partition that may rebuild your OS it like a backup already on the drive
Best buy will likely say you got a virus and want to charge you for removal , then say you need a clean install of Windows and charge you $99 for something you can do yourself

I doubt that you got hacked. I just think that your update changed the "Autologon" key in the registry.

And it's possible that you had a password associated with the administrator account. Sometimes this same thing happens to me, however, because I don't have a password on any of my login accounts, it just prompts me to click on the user that I want to to log on as.

I finally got it to let me restore to a good point, seems ok now. Being brand new I didn't think twice about an update, so I just let it run seeing I was loading up some programs that could have had out of date drivers etc.

I am sorry but I really had to laugh after reading your post. Do yourself a favor and burn a copy of linux puppy. It is a real small os and it boots right off the cd. When one of my computers starts screwing up I check things out with puppy.
I consider puppy an old friend. Puppy has been the difference between no internet and having internet.
I would head up to bestbuy and tell them to take this pos back.

I'm back on the DhELL. Stared having problems with the new laptop today so I went and saw the GEEKs a Bestbuy, they showed me how to do a system recovery and said if that doesn't work I probably have corrupt software and if so I'd be getting a new computer. After doing the recover I got a window saying that windows can not install software on his computers hardware.

Back to Besbuy tomorrow.

After you go to BB and drop that thing on their counter for a refund, swing by the local Apple store. https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&...oru0gGr2s3kBw&ved=0CJcBEPwSMAM&oi=local_group

Nice and easy :D and no more :banghead:

I looked at switching, but my wallet slammed shut so hard I nearly lost a finger. This is only a $300 ASUS to hold me over until I can afford to get something better.
