it helps with deflection of the tensioner. you have the steel brackets it looks like. they are not so important on the steel ones but it helps keep the aluminum ones from cracking and breaking off. if you can get one i would recommend putting it back on

cracking from the corner. let me take a picture of my braket and let me know if this might be why my braket brakes

In my automotive repair shop i had a c1500 come in with a sheared bracket once. took out half the front of the motor with it. I would install one, as im pretty sure every SBC i have seen with that alternator has had that support bar.

These brackets are reasonably cheap thru the dealer. My brother and I have purchased numerous bracket assemblies from the dealer so we could convert older gm cars to serpentine setups. But, as old as our vans are getting, they probably dont stock them like they use to.

is $80 dollars cheap. the Chevy dealer of this town has them in stock. i bought this one two years ago. now are the old brakets made from stronger steel then the ones they sell now. or are they the same.

well, the ones we always got were the aluminum brackets. I looked back at your pics and see that you have the steel ones. What you'll want to ask the dealer is does the bracket come with the stabilizers. But, you might want to check what the junk yard would charge for the brackets first before going through with dismantling it. As well as making sure the stabilizers are still on the junk vehicle. It seems that the aluminum brackets are cheaper. I dont remember paying but half that for each bracket when we did a bunch of serpentine upgrades on older vehicles. I could be wrong. But you will obviously need all the stabilizers that gm realized it needed. I bet it was a service bulletin, after it was built when they realized the brackets were breaking.

okay tomorrow i will go to the junk yard and get the bar and i will also ask them for a price on the braket. the braket that the van at the junk yard has looks good no cracks. and people have removed a couple of parts and that might make it easy to take the braket off. :ty: all

I wouldn't be able to answer that correctly. I build my own engines. And when I bought my van, it needed an engine. So that's why I put a v8 in it. You will probably have a problem doing that, cause I think you live in cali(smog). I guess if the junk yard engine is complete and is cheaper than the core charge, you could take the accesories off and have it rebuilt or send out as a core.
